Hey I see on the fringes of your chart Oceanic by Isis (which is cool stuff) and I was wondering if you ever listened to Neurosis' classic 1996 LP Through Silver In Blood? That LP became a top 10 to 20 all timer for me recently. Up there with Reign In Blood and Terrorizer's World Downfall and Pig Destroyer's Prowler In The Yard as my favorite metal/metal-adjacent albums ever. Okay, I lied, Reign In Blood is another higher tier. But its there in the discussion with the other 2 men2tioned lol.

Awesome to hear you're exploring punk and those super extreme and classic Discordance Axis and Orchid LPs being there made me smile. The new Knoll LP maybe is something you'll like, love or at least find interesting.

UPDATED CHART, WOOHOO! Should be fairly static for the next year or so? But you never know, we are all discovering things and new albums come out. Big rules on my chart are: (1) compilations are allowed if they are only compilations of singles/EPs/unreleased tracks-- any compilation of studio albums are disqualified; (2) At most 2 per artist; (3) no more trying to satisfy all decades of modern music recording-- if I am biased to the 90s to present, so be it.

It has been the summer of punk music for me. Punk is a genre I've always neglected, with the exception of post-punk, but I was motivated to listen to the essentials. I have listened to the Minute Men and Dead Kennedy's discographies in June. Going to listen to more essentials. I also want to dive back into Memphis hip-hop, revisiting some Three-6 Mafia and other essential artists. I also want to binge some Krautrock, so I am starting with some essential Popul Vuh.

I spent the last year or so really digging into some obscurities. I found a lot of dope albums, but I'm kind of exhausted with this binge. There are still plenty of classic recordings and albums that I have not even heard a track off of. Might as well broaden my tastes through those albums. That's about it for me.

In Stereo by Nemo (CAN)

Bumping my repeatedly forgotten music diary to share this forgotten gem of an album. I already shared it on the "What are you currently listening to?" thread, but I'm sharing it here before it gets lost in that hay stack. In Stereo gaining traction on RYM and rightfully show. It's a great blend of space rock and shoegaze; reminds me of a heavier Swervedriver with more drones. Excellent stuff.

Haven't posted on BEA forums in a minute. Just wanted to give light to this underrated piece in Paysage d'Hiver's discography.

Steineiche by Paysage d'Hiver

First first track is standard Paysage (and his standard is always excellent), but track two is something I haven't heard Wintherr done before: doom metal?? It was fuckin' sweet. It still had his identifiable lofi haze, but it was most certainly a doom metal riff with some deep growly vocals instead of his normal screech. Again, this is something I have never heard him do before and I have heard a few albums by him outside of his essential albums (e.g. self titled, Winterkalte, Das Tor). I wish he did more of that kind of stuff. I'm going through his discography in order so I may come across this style again, but I wanted to highlight this album real quickly because it is an underrated gem in his catalogue.

Consuming Impulse by Pestilence

Finally got to this album and it was fucking amazing! Death metal with some thrash flair to it. The guitars sound very sharp, electric, and crunchy and I love the power and slight agony behind the vocalist. I also checked out their debut which is just as good. Their debut is more thrash metal, but the guitar work is catchy and great and the vocalist's performance is just as stellar.

That's a great selection! Death metal has always been my weak point, but in the last few months I've heard a lot of the classics and other miscellaneous stuff. A bit lighter and more melodic than most of the albums here, but possibly my favourite Gothenburg death metal:

Crystallize by Tokyo Shoegazer

If you like your shoegaze on the noisier, heavily-MBV-influenced side, look no further. Crystallize nails that perfect blend of romantic and wall of sound noisy shoegaze that I love in a MBV record, but its post-rock flair prevents it from being a mere copy cat. This is an essential shoegaze listen, imo.

Ta Det Lugnt by Dungen

This was a very refreshing listen. Psychedelic rock with Swedish folk splashed into there. It felt as clean and crisp as that mixture sounds. Very pleasant on the ears, too.

Finally got to this. I waited for rainy/cloudy weather to fit the mood. This is probably my second favorite release by them. It is certainly their most chilling and atmospheric, which I love. Thank you for showing this, travelful, because I would've completely missed it.

Grandeur Of Hair by The Goslings

Just fuck up my hearing, fam. This blend of noise rock (noise?) and shoegaze is tremendous. It sounds so massive, like "Earthmover" off of Deathconsciousness, but for an entire hour. The vocals are so haunting yet sweet. This is absolutely up my alley.

Melee by Dogleg

I wasn't expecting this much enjoyment from this record. Some all killer, no filler and extremely potent post-hardcore emo rock. This band isn't reinventing the wheel or anything, but it's just a really good emo album. The guitars sound razor sharp and the melodies are very captivating. The slight harshness to the vocals add to the passion of the record. Again, it's not a groundbreaking record by any means, but it reminds me of the newest Strokes album in the sense that it's just an album of very good songs. Definitely worth checking out for your 2020 discoveries.

Born Under A Bad Sign by Albert King

Excellent soul blues record I discovered off RYM. The electric guitar playing is so passionate and I love Albert King's vocals. Plus, the lyrics are so memorable, such as on the title track, "If it wasn't for bad luck, you'd know I would have no luck at all." Like, DAMN. I love this record.

I want the focus of my diary to be of lesser known gems or forgotten classics that need to be remembered, but I do want to acknowledge the new Fiona Apple record due to its hype. Yes, it is very very good. I know Pitchfork slapped it with a 10 (I had no idea they would ever give one out again tbh), and it is worthy of the praise it's getting. There hasn't been anything on here so this next statement is not geared towards anyone on BEA: Down the road, when it comes to AOTY lists and all, I hope people don't get shit for calling it their favorite record of the year. For some reason, there is a stigma within the music nerd community when someone makes an album that receives soooo much acclaim their favorite album of the year. I hate going on social media or RYM and seeing people get ripped on for that reason. Another thing that upsets me is when they get ripped on because their favorite album by a particular band happens to be their most popular record. I don't get it. Is it a rule that in order to be a true fan of a band, your favorite album must not be their most iconic? Idk, that's a whole 'nother rant I could go on that may not even be worth spending time on. Just know that the new Fiona record is very very good and worth a listen.

Mestarin Kynsi by Oranssi Pazuzu

I loved their 2016 record Värähtelijä, it's currently on my overall. Some of the trippiest black metal I've ever heard. They do an excellent job blending psychedelic and space rock into their craft, and Varahtelija is the record where they found their sound. Mestarin Kynsi shows that they took the time to reflect on their strengths from Varahtelija because it sounds like an ideal follow up. I'd even say it's trippier. I would not be surprised if this album becomes my favorite by them with more listens.
