Genres would be super great. A system not unlike the tagging system at Last.fm would be a great way to categorize these things.

Thanks! Can't wait until it's implemented 😄

It's not been properly announced yet, but initially the ability to add 'decade' charts is going to be added (followed by 'year' charts soon after). This post here sets out the next set of major improvements.

I thought I'd seen it somewhere. Thanks!

What sort of options will there be for new charts? Is there a thread that has information on this?

The short answer is 'no' this hasn't been added yet, but it would make a great improvement! This was intended to be added this year, but I think it will now be deferred to 2012 due to time constraints (multiple charts are imminent). I'm going to point you to the other thread which contains a detailed discussion of this issue.

I vaguely remember a post about genres from a while ago. Did that ever happen?

I feel like it wouldn't be difficult to implement, certainly for the popular albums. You could have people give the genre of albums on their chart, which would cover, in theory, all albums (save those users who are inactive).

After, say, 10 album genres "agree" for one album, it can be set to be that, and people won't be asked about it anymore. This prevents people with a hundred albums from having to identify lots of albums (although my guess is that some may not mind, even like doing it).

Once these are in place, new lists can be made, such as "best rock", "best rap", etc...
