Great topic...I will get back to this periodically when I have good ideas, but here are just a few thoughts off the top of my head:

Decades - Joy Division (obviously); and Atmosphere
Cult - Skinny Puppy (from 1996's underrated The Process album)
This Mortal Coil's breathtaking cover of Song to the Siren
Don't Fear the Reaper - BOC (haha not really)
Running Up That Hill - Kate Bush
Life on Mars - David Bowie (just feels like sorrowful celebration...if that makes sense)
More Bowie - Heroes, Look Back in Anger
Elvis Costello's fantastic version of Gloomy Sunday
Sooo many Nick Cave possibilities: Brompton Oratory, Sorrow's Child, The Mercy Seat (slowed-down live version), There Is a Kingdom

Float On isn't a bad choice, but I agree that almost no matter what plays, it'll sound cheesy. 😕

I actually really like the choice of In The Aeroplane Over The Sea 😁 That'd be an excellent song

I honestly think I would use A Day In The Life though 😄 It might be an obvious choice, but I think it'd be my choice.

Also, there's always the possibility of a new song that'll come out between now, and the time of my death 🤣
