On the surface, a relatively “typical” chart, but there several true surprises to elevate it well beyond the drearily mundane.

Split by Lush is one, although it is not as good as the earlier Spooky or the compilation Gala in my opinion. Forever Breathes The Lonely Word is an album I have never heard of though I do recall hearing of that band as something significant in the 1980s. Year of the Cat and The Waterboys are two albums few people younger than I am are likely to know about, and even Tindersticks and David Sylvian can appear a little left-field reading charts created recently.

There are also a few relatively rare albums by familiar artists – Larks' Tongues In Aspic and Starless and Bible Black are much rarer than several other King Crimson albums, and Stratosfear I have never seen on any best-albums list despite seeing Tangerine Dream (with Alpha Centuari) on David Keenan’s list back in 2003.
