go ahead and fix that. Beefheart and the Stooges (assuming these are the ones you haven't heard) are really great. probably not your style of music, but it's good to expand your horizons and what not.

I see where you're coming from and I've thought about this too so I was careful to just say Jimi Hendrix, rather than the Experience. However, I've heard that Jimi was often frustrated with his backing band and that they couldn't really keep up with his expectations so I'm not sure they should be getting so much credit.. who knows. Might have just been Jimi's superego was the problem.

A weird nuance of this debate that I have noticed in my personal musical taste is that British bands are much more consistent throughout albums. Most of my favorite bands are American, but a lot of these American bands will have a few great songs per album as well as a good deal of filler. When it comes to my favorite British bands, all of their albums are chock full of outstanding songs, and I end up skipping very few tracks.

I'm looking at this topic from a slightly different perspective in regards to who, historically speaking, has been the most notable in terms of influential movements and ideas. It's a close call.

Probably the UK's most influential and creative 'scene' was that which emerged in Canterbury during the late 60s out of which spawned artists like Kevin Ayers, David Bedford, Lol Coxhill, Robert Frip Robert Wyatt etc.

Bands like Caravan, Gentle Giant and, most significantly, Soft Machine, were the genesis of the prog-rock movement which spawned King Crimson who probably produced the first ever prog-rock album with their 'In The Court Of The Crimson King'.

This highly original band ran alongside another highly influential and pioneering band of the period, London's Pink Floyd. Canterbury and London was where it was at during the late 60s and early 70s.

But running parallel to that was the 'acid' and hippie scene in California of which bands like The Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane were its personification.

Allied to that was the counter to the counter culture in the form of Red Crayola, The Velvet Underground, Frank Zappa and above all, the genius Captain Beefheart, arguably the most innovative and influential musician of all time.

The next major shift happened following the emergence of the 'existential' angst that underpinned the punk movement that came out of New York a decade later. This movement took as its trigger the acid trip of the West coast mixed with the kind of pyrotechnical poetic brilliance of Jim Morrison.

But often overlooked are the Stooges whose highly influencial proto-punk combined the old school garage sound of the mid 60s with the wild decadence of the Stones.

Patti Smith and Television were the key figures that successfully merged the strands of the former. British punk by comparison, was a far less rounded movement lacking the intellectual vigour of the former. The Clash, however, were its saviours.

The New Wave, Post rock and post punk scenes produced some equally interesting bands on both sides of the Atlantic but again, the US shades it by virtue of the vibrant hardcore and 'sub-pop' scene as well as the brilliance of bands like Talking Heads and Pere Ubu.

Arguably, the sophisticated 'pub rock' of The Soft Boys in London singularly set in motion the pyschedelic and Paisley revival in 1980 that itself spawned many like-minded bands on both sides of the pond during the subsequent decade. This movement was to produce two of the finest psychedelic bands of not only their period, but of any period - the US groups Mercury Rev and Flaming Lips.

For me, the US shades it.

I know I'm all-American, but I have to be honest. U'K, in most cases, rock louder than we do. Zeppelin, Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Radiohead (the four biggest bands on this site) are all U.K. I know we had Elvis, Aerosmith, and Nirvana, but they also have:
The Who
Cream
Fleetwood Mac (except Stevie and Lindsay)
Def Leppard
Black Sabbath

The US had those that you mentioned, along with Jimi Hendrix, Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers Band, James Brown, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, R.E.M., Tom Petty, The Beach Boys, Van Halen, Metallica, The Ramones, KISS, The Velvet Underground.. and that's just from the limited amount of stuff that I listen to.

I used to think UK, as I suppose they have more of the "bigger" bands overall. But the more music I listen to, the more I'm seeing the unending breadth of great music coming out of the U.S. I'm not saying it doesn't exist in other places, but just in personal opinion I'd go U.S. now.
1: Japan, USA

2: France, Germany, UK

3: Australia, Canada, Italy

4: Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland

5: Argentina, China, Finland, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey

6: Central America, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Cuba, Czech Republic, Egypt, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Jamaica, Malaysia, Mali, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Singapore, Venezuela

Apart from "DE STAAT" there are no good bands in the Netherlands
