I really like Modest Mouse and Mineral. Never got into Cap'n Jazz other than a few songs. I clearly need to check out The Promise Ring and Texas Is the Reason. I'm pretty unfamiliar with both, though I like the clips of them you posted. I am working on getting a few of their albums now.

I think you're right on the money. Here's some other '90s emo I enjoy:

Link

Link

Link

Link

Modest Mouse could have also been briefly considered an emo/post-hardcore band early in their career:

First of all I have never thought of Jawbox to be an emo band. That said I might reconsider as they offer a very cohesive blend of raw, noisy, driving energy and melodic hooks with pop sensibilities – a major calling card of the emo genre.

There are unfortunately a lot of great bands with strikingly similar dynamics that get left in the dust far too often. Sunny Day Real Estate is a phenomenal band, with How It Feels... and Diary easily two genre-cornerstones, and The Rising Tide as one of the most underrated rock albums of its era, and maybe the last sincere "emo" album to be recorded before emo (thanks to The Get Up Kids, Jimmy Eat World and the likes) turned itself into a punchline. Jawbreaker did great work as well, and Dear You will certainly stand the test of time if anyone will care to remember it.

One major oversight however: the two so-called "founders" of emo – back when emo was loud, ear-bleeding chaos and noisy as all hell – the godfathers Rites of Spring and the incomparable Drive Like Jehu. If I had to choose a most underrated, most under-appreciated, and most undeservedly-obscure band, perhaps (perhaps) of all time, they are it. Their self-titled debut and the stellar follow-up, Yank Crime, are so raw, noisy and chaotic yet technically mind-blowing, all while maintaining the visceral emotion that is so essential to the emo personality.

Emo is dead. That is the sad truth. Fortunately there is still plenty of highly-emotive, loud, driving rock music out there -- it just goes by a different name these days.

There are a lot of albums that when released were not well received or popular but end up getting critical acclaim in retrospect.I find that many old "emo" are definitely being overlooked when looking at best albums of the 90's.
