The new Alicia is pretty typical pop, but it tries. The Diary, Unplugged and Here are the absolute musts if you ask me.

And I thought Mos Def talks too much about New York on "Black on Both Sides" but "NEW YORK" may be mentioned even more on this album, which, as a "flyover stater", is completely uninteresting to me.

That being said, this album is just fine. There's nothing particularly outstanding about it, and there is also nothing else that is mediocre. I really was just trying to cause some more discussion earlier when I said she's shitty (there's far worse of course). 😁 I honestly have not listened to anything of hers since it was on the radio in the early oughts as a child. Except for that terrible "Girl On Fire" song.

She sings well, and sings about important things, but it still all feels way too safe. Not that I go there, but I feel like all of these are probably on rotation for a place like Starbucks. Something to have on that nobody could possibly complain about.

If this place really is against her, at least she is in good company. My favorites are not exactly the most popular here either, but I deal with it.

No problem.

The most notable moments of worthwhile instrumentation are mostly present on The Diary and Unplugged. After she achieved massive success so early in her career, there was less need. It's likely that Alicia will never release an album that does her voice complete justice.

There are a lot of popular artists that I haven't even bothered spinning yet, like Mariah Carey and Shania Twain, so you're not alone. You just make time when you can.

I haven't bothered with the last Alicia yet. The thing is, the consensus seems to be that the new album is her worst so far, and I think I have a good grasp on Alicia since I've heard most of her catalogue, including Unplugged. Add the fact that I believe that the usual instrumentation of her albums does no justice to her beautiful voice, I didn't feel the need to finish her catalogue until now, so I'll do that today. It'll be a decent break from re-evaluating the metalcore albums I need for my upcoming chart.

To be fair, so far I've only listened to As I Am, Here and Alicia. All three are really good and I currently rank Here in the top five the year it came out. Also that album cover just screams listen to me haha. My local music store has three more I've been meaning to buy so I'll be doing that soon.

I noticed that Corinne Bailey Rae has higher average ratings but a lower vote count. Still, she has a lot of votes in general, so how would her ratings compare yo Alivia if she had the same types of voting counts? Alicia's debut has 130 and Corinne's highest vote count is 41.
