I don't care about the pretentious or overblown if it's good music. And anyway i think Muse didn't intended to sound really big or pretentious with this album, I think they have become a little more of that lately and Bellamy is growing on his self indulgence sometimes is too much. Still is one of my favorites albums ever, I think is a beautiful powerful album, totally will be in my chart.

It's not their best album (I prefer "Origin of Symmetry" and "Showbiz"), but it has some of their best songs: Butterflies & Hurricanes, Hysteria and Stockholm Syndrome.

I have seen Muse about 5 times live (fanboy here) and I have to say they are one of the most entertaining and spectacular live acts I have seen.

And the idea that they are pretentious is somewhat incorrect. Granted that they are not as recognised or critically acclaimed as many bands but their talent and stage presence are impressive. They possess great ideas and the ability to pull it off. The only issue is that bands like Queen had that before their time.

I'll agree to this.

Muse just seems like a band that I could listen to, but I wouldn't mind if they never existed. The musical equivalent to a giant shoulder shrug.

Honestly even when I liked Muse (enough to have seen them twice live) I thought this album was a piece of shit and it really really is. Candidate for one of the worst entries in the top 100.

EDIT: okay Stockholm Syndrome isn't terrible

I like the album. I have a cd copy of it that I listen to occasionally, but I don't think it's one of the top 100 ever...Maybe top 200.

This album was once in my chart, but didn't get better with time, this is generally the problem with Muse. still, a very good album. i don't mind seeing it in the top 100 even if i prefer by far Origin Of Symmetry

Apocalypse Please is definitely one of the best openers I've ever heard. Stockholm Syndrome is also an amazing song. An album with a very distinct sound. Bellamy definitely emulates Thom Yorke, but besides his voice they aren't a Radiohead clone at all like a lot of people say. Well worth its spot on the list I believe.

Yes, they definitely deserve credit for their technical proficiency. I had the opportunity to see them live last summer and it was an incredible show just because it's amazing to watch them perform. Nevertheless, I will never consider them one of the greater bands of our time for the simple reason that their music IS incredibly pretentious and overblown (I suppose that probably sounds hypocritical coming from someone whose favorite album is A Night at the Opera, but I feel as though ANATO is significantly more artfully crafted).

While I ultimately hate what this album represents (Queen meets OK Computer... really?), Matt Bellamy and the rest of the crew pull off this album so extraordinarily well that it deserves to be on my top 100. "Apocalypse Please" is at least one of the greatest openers of the past decade. It starts to lose steam in the second half, but there's absolutely nothing like the awesomely epic first slab.

On a random note, my brother actually likes this album BECAUSE of the obscene pretentiousness. Same with The Mars Volta and Bon Iver. He hates any indie music that's humble.
