Haha true, I couldn't compete with that. My strategy was to not post in the thread in the hope that no one would notice I had taken the lead.

I agree, I really liked this match because it was evenly balanced and all around good stuff. Glad it's a draw in the end, but you were up by 1 some 2 days ago when I last checked. Sorry to steal the win heh.

So after the second listen to the Non Phixion album I have some thoughts. As someone who was a kid and couldn't care less about 9/11 and the conspiracy theories surrounding it at the time, it's interesting to look at those theories, or more specifically those presented in The Future Is Now, and compare them to the current ones. Deep state? Check. Cameras monitoring everyone and everything? Check (even partially proven). Peadophile rings? Check (again, partially proven). CIA, FBI, police etc. We haven't really progressed, and a small portion of it was even proven to be right which is pretty scary. That being said, The Future is Now does sound dated and silly at times, the MF DOOM feature was really meh (as someone has already stated), and overall it feels dated, not always in a bad way but mostly. The future was then, and now it sounds like the past. The production is dope though, and The C.I.A. Is Still Trying To Kill Me with Deftones and Fear Factory is really fun, although it's also a very 2002 decision to make a rap rock song with nu metal/groove metal bands (albeit Deftones are the best ones from that scene, and arguably the only ones who changed the sound and emerged as a serious band after the nu metal craze dwindled).

By far the hardest matchup of the tournament so far, my initial intention was to abstain, but I'm thinking the Biggie+Jigga combo is simply too much and can't be ignored - it would feel like a betrayal not voting in favor of them - , despite not being big on the other two 1997 picks and the all-around consistency of the 2002 team.

The Fix is the best thing here by a decent margin, gives 2002 a slight lead as far as album's are concerned.

The Fix >> Life After Death > Fun Crusher >= The Future Is Now

When factoring in the singles, Feelin' It is my favorite one without a doubt and The Rain my least favorite without a doubt. Both 2002 selections are stellar.

Overall, going with 2002 by a smidge.

Yeah, I just can't get into Funcrusher Plus. I like the production well enough but the MCs don't do it for me. I can't really explain why. Otherwise the 1997 team has really solid singles and Life After Death is great but I'm sticking with my team here.

"What Can I Do?" is one of my favorite songs on The Fix with these lyrics being some of my all time favorites, I just love how he sticks with the same rhyme scheme throughout:

I say goodbye to you cruel world

Zoinked-out Y2k anxiety vs early post 9/11 paranoid malaise. Perfectly contrasting offerings. I think shameless Texas patriotism is going to come into play though as '02 may eke this out for having some true Houston classics, but still have some re-listening to do.

Leaning 2002 on the strength of The Fix and 'You Already Know'. Love that Houston 1-2 punch, even if The Fix is basically Face's attempt at an early 2000s Roc-A-Fella record. 'You Already Know' is easily my favourite single here, even given the strength of the others. I've listened to it multiple times per day since this matchup went up. One of the best things nominated across the whole tournament. It's very similar in vibe and sound to a song I'm probably gonna nominate for the next match. Nice to see HAWK turn up twice in this round, too - he's a feature on the Guerilla Maab album I nominated.

Going in I thought I'd give this one to 2002. One of my favorite records ever in The Fix (no one sounds so comfortable over a beautifully sped up piano timbre quite like Scarface) that a relisten immediately prompted me to go through the man's entire discography again. Rest of my relistens though really changed my mind on some things. Non Phixion is also a group I have a ton of nostalgia for but it sounds so politically dated now, loaded with false equivalencies and that general sense of righteous yet unfocused deep state phobia that was going around in 2002. While the packaging and production on this thing is still so inspired part of me found a lot of the guest verses super forgettable (that is definitely MF DOOM at some of his most monotonous). Plus I was reallllllly underrating 97's selections at first. In Biggie's case, I chock that up at least in part to the tendency for armchair critics like myself to be extra hard on double albums that falter even slightly but Life After Death is essentially two hours of perfection with less than 7 minutes of filler. Finally come around to this one being the best thing the man ever did. Plus after hating on Def Jux alumni all tournament I finally remembered the spark that first made me appreciate this material. Company Flow goes hard into El-P's strengths as the apocalyptic east coast king and is definitely my second favorite beat collection of his (maybe third? I'm a High Water apologist). Anyway I'd give this to 97 though I still have to refresh my memory on the singles and'll come back to this.
