Really, that "Family Tree" that Gary posted would be the most helpful to anyone wanting to learn about metal. Personally, I think the whole thing works more like a "flow chart" than a family tree. Just start at the top...sample those bands. IF you like those bands, THEN you might try something from the next grouping.

Sampling metal bands is a lot like sampling sushi. Start out simple. Try a California Roll. Then, if you like that, you can get more exotic.

But, remember, you'd never try sushi if you don't like rice. So, if you don't tend to like highly amplified distortion, ephatic beats, guitar and drum solos, and just overall heavy loudness, then don't even attempt to listen to metal. It won't be for you.

See, I don't mind this kind of stuff. I can hear a melody!
According to that 'metal family tree' you posted (GARY), right now I already like Early Metal, Hard Rock, Shock Rock, Pop Metal, Punk, Grunge... and jumping straight to Thrash Metal was probably a little ridiculous. I'll just work my way down, starting from the heavier rock stuff.

I'll get 'round to listening to lots of the suggestions everyone has posted. Thanks heaps!

I agree with you Xavygravy, i don't mind if the music is heavy as anything, but i still want something with some melody. For this reason i found an album like Slayer's 'Reign In Blood' very hard to enjoy, whereas i am a big fan of Killswitch Engage - they mix quite extreme (for me) screaming with very melodic, uprising choruses.
The best option is to approach Metal as you would any other genre - listen to as much variety within the genre as you can, and you'll eventually find something you like, whether it's Thrash, old-school Metal, Speed Metal or even the heavier Black/Death metal.
There's already been some good suggestions of bands to check out, here are my favourite Metal albums:

Iron Maiden - 7th Son of a 7th Son
Metallica - Ride the Lightening (my favourite Metal album of all time!)
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Deftones - Deftones
Killswitch Engage - End Of Heartache
Cancer Bats - Hail Destroyer

oh, and a word of warning: keep well away from Cannibal Corpse!

Iron Maiden - 7th Son of a 7th Son

This would be one of the first albums I would suggest for getting into metal Xavygravy

You will have 2 build up a tolerance before you try 2 listen 2 death metal

I'm serious dude.

Well if Fucked Up can show up in this thread then I recommend System of a Down: especially considering that they really like to juxtapose their heavy bits with either melodic and anthemic choruses or bizarre catchy screwed up bits (can't think of a better way to describe them)

bonus this song for funny lyrics....

I have a friend who is a complete metalhead, she loaned me some black and death metal albums and I preffered the screaming bits, when they actually tried to sing the singer had annoying voices.

Folk metal is pretty entertaining, hurdy gurdys and bagpipes over down-tuned guitars!

One more recommendation: Fucked Up. A contemporary hardcore band (which I suppose puts them halfway between punk and metal) who have released a bunch of good, heavy albums very recently. Their latest, David Comes to Life, is incredibly melodic while still having the elements of hardcore and its yet even "metal-er" offshoots metalcore, thrash, etc.

A taste:

I love metal, but not everyone is going to like it.

I mean, I don't think that you can MAKE yourself like metal or any other genre for that matter.

"METAL" covers a very wide range of music.

If you enlarge this you will see what I mean.

Personally I like, and have followed a path of great interest in chronological order

Early metal
Power metal
New wave of British heavy metal
thrash
Nu metal.

All I can say is

THERE IS A SHITLOAD OF METAL VIDEOS IN THE BEA FORUM

I started a thread called Hard rock/metal videos which has over 200 videos on it.

I started the Black Sabbath thread which has numerous Sabbath videos on it.

And, the one you really should check out first

My Iron Maiden appreciation thread 😁

Trust me Xavygravy, I've been listening to metal since the 70's and I guarantee you that the best metal band ever is Iron Maiden. They reside alone at the pinnacle of the metal world.

The Number of the Beast

Iron Maiden's music has as much melody as ANY kind of music out there 🤐

Once you get used to the power, speed, and intensity of metal.

You won't just "want" to listen to metal

YOU WILL NEED 2

IMO metal fans are the best and most dedicated of any genre of music.

Check out this crowd. FYI the lead singer/guitar player (Dave Mustaine) used to be in Metallica

I forgot about my Judas Priest better than Metallica thread.

Starting on page 6 there are numerous Judas Priest videos.

Yeah if you're looking melodies in metal, then Master of Puppets (or most of thrash metal) probably isn't for you. Although even Metallica has some nice, melodic songs, like Fade to Black.
Now I'm not the best person to come to for metal recommendations, considering I'm not exactly a huge fan myself, but I'll second Applerill's Black Sabbath recommendations. I have Paranoid and Vol 4 on my chart. And my favourite metal album (artist too) is Tool's Aenima, which was already mentioned before. It's an example of "alternative" or progressive metal:

One more thing. If you never listened to any metal in your life, than it's understandable that you don't like most of it straight away, and it could just be the matter of getting used of it. I didn't listen to any hip hop for example in my entire life until couple of years back, then I struggled to like pretty much anything, but now I'm a fan of quite a few artists, even some of those that I disliked when I started to get into this kind of music.

Yeah, have you tried to get into any of Sabbath's albums, Xavy? I would highly suggest their debut or Paranoid. They're full of great Ozzy-written melodies.

I've found sludge/stoner rock to be a good gateway into heavier sounds. It usually relies much more heavily on melody and effects similar to shoegaze than more genre-bound stuff like screams, groans, double-bass, and static guitars.

A few suggestions:

*Kyuss/Queens of the Stone Age - super entry level, much closer to rock than metal, but still very heavy and very good bands. Other Josh Homme projects could go here too (Them Crooked Vultures, Eagles of Death Metal). These bands are super-melodic and rhythmic in a fairly straightforward way, I would definitely check them out.
*Harvey Milk - their earlier stuff leaned more experimental, but their albums since Special Wishes onward are more accessible and melodic. One caveat: their singer is a heavy groaner. I got used to it pretty quickly though, with all the other great stuff going on in their music. Check out Special Wishes or Life... The Best Game in Town first.
*Boris - my personal favorite metal band, though much of their discography is split between straightforward stoner, sound experiments, and drone. Good albums that veer towards melodic, heavy rock are, uh, Heavy Rocks and Akuma No Uta.

Speaking of Drone, that's also a good gateway into the heavier stuff, though from a glance it sacrifices most semblance of a melody in favor of atmosphere. It's the polar opposite of grindcore and all those fast motherfuckers: it intentionally goes at a glacial pace to build tension and explore the nuances of each sound. Gateway bands in drone are Sunn O))), Boris (Feedbacker, Flood, and Absolutego are the go-to albums here), and Earth.

When you start to blur the lines between drone and stoner, you get doom metal, which often has the steady, slow buildup of drum with the more straightforward instrumentation of stoner. Off the top of my head, a good doom band to check out would be Khanate, though their vocalist's sinister whispery-style can be off-putting to a newbie.

Lastly, listen to Baroness. They're a fairly new band that doesn't sacrifice anything for melody, though it certainly builds around it with plenty of other interesting things too. Check out the Red Album or the Blue Album.

Everything I said above is pretty advanced, though (with the exception of Kyuss, QotSA and the other Josh Homme projects, definitely check those out). For a simpler gateway into metal, it's best to go with the heavy metal classics. Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Queensryche, Mastodon, Motorhead, and lastly, Slayer.

Hope this helps.

you should listen to the other side of master of puppets. It is hard to believe a person could not like that album

i suggest listening to pantera-the great southern trendkill then the 2 that came out before it also.

Since jumping straight into metal probably won't do it for me, I'll just try starting with the heavy rock/metal stuff, like Queens of the Stone Age, and work my way from there.

I'm not a metal-head, so perhaps my favorite 'metal' albums will help ease you into the genre (not much thrash in me though)...
White Zombie-AstroCreep 2000
Refused- The Shape of Punk to Come
Tool-Aenima
