The 2000's choice was really weird though 🤔 I wouldn't say Someday symbolized the 2000's at all. (Great song, and I know you like the Strokes, but I don't think it'd work).

I would also have to agree with Cartoken's 50s-90s choices, but the 2000s are a tough bunch. Can't decide.

I think the 2000s marked a time when there was NO definitive. The age of pluralism at it's best. Indie rock and all that shit. I kinda miss the definitive days (not that I lived through most of them), but then again where would we be if all the bands sounded the same and were all definitive.

You really need to read the thread more carefully before commenting.

And folks, this isn't songs that most define the decade of music - they're the songs that most definitively mark the whole of the decade itself, events, culture, fads, music, etc.

Well, the first rule of reading and writing is that people tend to read what you write, NOT what you intended to write. Waiting for the 5th page of a thread to make a clarification and then accusing people of not reading properly is at best fatuous.

50s - 'Take Five' ´Dave Brubeck Quartet (agree that 50s=blue note jazz and I think this pretty much sums that up)
60s - 'My Generation' - The Who (60s all about youth and the redifining of what it is to be a teenager - what sums that up better than 'My Generation)
70s - 'God Save The Queen' - Sex Pistols (Queen's jubilee coincides with Punk the sound of the 70s)
80s - 'Material Girl' - Madonna (I personally hate this song, but it sums up the greed and lust for money of the 80s and is sung by an 80s icon)
90s - 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' - Nirvana (the couldn't give a shit generation x rebelling against the greed of the 80s and Indie goes commercial)
00s - 'The Real Slim Shady'- Eminem (struggled with the 00s as no one song really stood out but I am inclined to agree with Jhereko that eminem is as much the sound of the 00s as the sex pistols and nirvana are for previous decades and this is all about McJobs and hopelessness which to me is a bit of a 00s theme)

60's: as much as I'd like to say "God Only Knows" (and it obviously had significant influence) "Like A Rolling Stone" is the correct answer.

And folks, here are the songs which I think define the decade as a whole (now that we're away from the rock-n-roll genre thing)... I would argue that music directly relates to the culture of the decade (or any predetermined time) in which it was made, including fads, art, etc... so....

'50s - So What - Miles Davis ('50s is jazz, and this is the most recognizable track from that genre)
'60s - Like A Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan (where would we be without this? influenced so much '60s material (and beyond))
'70s - When the Levee Breaks - Led Zeppelin (really captures the sounds of the '70s, as well as the mentality, I believe)
'80s - Teenage Riot - Sonic Youth (end of the decade, but a good summation of what alternative had been trying to achieve throughout the '80s)
'90s - Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana (self-expalnatory, much music is made in the wake of Nirvana; not to mention the clothing style)
'00s - All My Friends - LCD Soundsystem (LCD is the 'father' of modern alt., which has taken over modern 'good' music, and this is their anthem)

No, you're right, there are no innuendos, it's a completely unsubtle abomination.

That being said, heavy handed sexuality (as I said before) has always been a big part of music.

50s Elvis Presley, Aint nothin' but a hound dog. The only person I have from the 50's with a picture on a pub glass.
60s Beatles Beatle mania and the Ed Sullivan show. Help! I have that on a pub glass as well.
70s KISS, foreworks and make up. The only song I remember, "Beth"
80s MTV launched Guns and Roses just like ESPN launched Micheal Jordan. Timing is everything. Sweet Child o' Mine
90s Really tough, has anybody kicked ass since Guns and Roses. You know the marketing of Kiss may have sucked but its better than Brittany spears and Justin Bieber. OK back to 90s, think I agree with many previous posts with Nirvanas teen spirit, if not for those posts I would have went with Smashing Pumpkins and Today, either way its the Seattle Grunge scene.
