...jbarajas is totally right with that one, alcohol makes anything withstandable. But you're like, 14, right? So you can't drink legally anyhow. Not that that'll stop you, it sure as hell never stopped me 😉

applerill how old are you??? you know the best solution is to go to the bar and get yourself more than a few drinks... you'll love all of the top 40 hits then.

I 've worked at weddings many many times.... and dj's always plays the same stuff... I gotta feeling, can't stop believing, cupid shuffle will always be played.

As Hayden said it always varies on the crowd, but my best advice for you is to get hammered and enjoy the people around you.

I just look at the pictures .... Makes an artist like Shakira really worthy then.

In my days the solution was university bars or places where students hung out. The dancing in those places was much much less top 40 oriented and the ladies no less interesting.

I've never heard that quote but that's basically what I meant. I think all music has a purpose, whether it be dancing in a club, drinking in a pub or lounging in a comfy chair (ranked worst to best in my humble personal opinion).

Musical taste is a big deal for me, but I don't let it decide my friends and I won't be that closed-minded when I'm going out with friends who don't have the same musical taste as me. I'm not PRETENDING to like Britney Spears, they all know I'm not really a fan, but if I'm with them I'll listen to it anyway, because it isn't all about me and won't KILL me to listen to their music. "Being who you are" doesn't have to include being a snob to everyone who doesn't like what you like.

As I said before, tolerating and liking something aren't the same thing. I completely agree with Romanelli that you shouldn't just "follow the cool kids" in everything they do, even if that means pretending to like some crap music (of course, in his/hers opinion) and going to a party trying to dance to it even if you feel like an asshole doing it (unless you think you could get laid 🤔 ... But I couldn't, honestly, I get too awkward doing this).
But yeah, that still shouldn't mean that you should ignore or think less of people because of their different music taste, and I agree with what Jack said here.

Also, may I just add that "Be yourself" or "Be who you are" are BS advices to give to somebody

But maybe thats just a personal thing. In general I think though I just have an adverse attitude towards social activity, I'd rather stay at home and read a book than go to a party or club, even if the people shared my taste in music, it just doesn't appeal to me.

Every day after work I drive home listening to my cds, then close the blinds when i get home and lock the doors, and I don't leave until its time for work again. I only watch tv shows with no music, and I can't turn on the radio. When my girlfriend gets home and wants to watch something or listen to something, I run upstairs and close the door and blast my own music. When I have to go out for errands, I have to have my ipod with the headphones in.

Seriously though, I don't like pop music, but I don't let it interfere with my life. And I'll admit when I find a pop song catchy, and i'll listen to it. I hate indy kid hipsters who can't listen to popular music of any sort just because a lot of people actually like it. Although I do admit lesser known indy music is usually the best by far this day and age.

I'm very opinionated about the music I like, but I will never let it interfere with my life by affecting a relationship or where I go.

Jack stated a different viewpoint and I supported that argument - I fail to see along this line where you were made to feel any more or less welcome than anyone else seeing as we were all on an equal playing field.and I don't think anyone said "compromise yourself so cool kids would like you"...nope no one did (who uses the term cool kids at our age anyway?). ....Darn, why is it that every thread I make nowadays makes me look like a jerk?

Just to get things straight, I never said I actually threw a fit or anything about the music at this particular event. Even when I knew it would be all top-40 music, I still danced for about an hour and a half. It was only slightly after that, when I found out that about 1 of every 3 songs played was explicitly by the Black Eyed Peas and LMFAO (who are among the only real top 40 groups I genuinely can't stand), I decided to politely exit the building after saying my goodbyes to everyone, saying that "I was tired after the long day". So what I did wasn't nearly as snobby as it initially sounded.

But now I now all your reactions. Half of you guys are willing to put up with anything to make people happy (which I greatly admire); the other half of you are seem to be even greater music snobs than me. So I guess it's okay to be somewhere in the middle.

And as for the NIN thing, it was mostly a joke. I obviously knew beforehand that they would say no to my request, but I thought I'd give it a shot before I left to see the reaction on the DJ's face. He just politely said it "didn't apply to the audience", and I just thanked him for his honesty and left.
