IT DON'T COME EASY
Richard Starkey (& George Harrison (uncredited))

This song was written by Ringo and George, although only Ringo is credited. It was written while The Beatles were still together, between 1968 and 1970. The final recorded version was done in 1970 and produced by Harrison. It was released as a single only in 1971. It was later performed by Ringo at Harrison's Concert For Bangladesh. The studio version of "It Don't Come Easy" first appeared on an album in 1975, on the compilation Blast From Your Past. The studio track features Ringo (drums & vocals), Harrison (guitars), Gary Wright (piano), Klaus Voormann (bass), and Pete Ham & Tom Evans of Badfinger (vocals).

The Smithereens were huge fans of The Beatles, and covered many of their songs. This version was recorded in 1991 during the sessions for their album Blow Up. It was released as the B-side of the single "Only A Memory" in 1992. Its first album appearance was on the compilation Attack Of The Smithereens in 1995.

This was the theme song to a radio programme (on economics) that I listened to every day (five days a week) in my youth for about 10 years without ever noticing it was a Beatles song. 🫢

What the hell is going on with the YouTube links? I tried to put that Anne Murray link three times and it keeps coming out wrong. First it came out John Denver, and then it came out this other thing. This never happened to me before.

Here's another one that I recently heard on some random playlist. She said that one time she ran into John Lennon in an airport in Toronto or something while this was a hit, and he said that hers was better than the Beatles version and that they should have done it like that, because he wasn't pleased with the way theirs turned out. I like it better too.

I'm Looking Through You
Lennon-McCartney
Rubber Soul

One of McCartney's better songs...and one that gets overlooked. But Steve Earle got it. It's a great breakup song, which makes it a great country song. I love Earle's take on this from 1995. This is the version that got me to learn to play the song, and I sing it more in Earle's style than McCartney's.

I'm So Tired

Is Lucinda Williams reaching too far? From the end of the 70's through the 90's, it seemed like a miracle when she put out an album...now she's everywhere. She's dropped tributes to Dylan, The Stones, Tom Petty, and now, her newest album, The Beatles. Actually, "I'm So Tired" (2024) is a pretty great fit for Lucinda. She always kinda sounds exhausted, so John Lennon's ode to insomnia is a pretty good, if weird, fit for her.

Sings The Beatles From Abbey Road by Lucinda Williams

The original is from the White Album in 1968. John wrote the song in India about missing Yoko and not being able to sleep. Lennon stated that it was one of his favorite Beatles tracks.

You've Got To Hide Your Love Away

What's interesting about the all Beatles covers soundtrack to the 2001 film I Am Sam...they wanted to use the original Beatles recordings. But they couldn't get the rights to them. And the film was shot. So they were able to use cover versions, but they supposedly had to be recorded at or near the same tempos as The Beatles had done them in order for them to work in the film.

I Am Sam contains 17 Beatles covers.

There's also a studio version from Pieces Of The Sky, which I actually prefer, but the live version sounds a little clearer.
