Bad Monkey (Apple TV+ Original Series Soundtrack) by Various Artists

Bad Monkey is a TV series that will be making its debut on August 14th on Apple TV+. It will star Vince Vaughn & Michelle Monaghan. What does this have to do with Tom Petty? The soundtrack album, which is due out on October 4th, is actually a Tom Petty tribute album...for the first 21 tracks. Proving that Petty's music still has the reach, these 21 songs (some were hits, some are pretty obscure tracks) make for what promises to be an interesting album.

The advance track is this, from Eddie Vedder, who was a great admirer of Petty. "Room At The Top", from the 1999 album Echo, is maybe Petty's saddest song, written about his divorce. It was so sad for him that after the Echo tour he refused to play it live.

I could listen to 'I won't back down' and 'Learning to fly' on repeat for 24 hours each and still get goosebumps the next time I hear them

I played in a Petty tribute band for a bit. Absolutely the most fun music to play, for me. If you're going to start one, this album is essential. You will want to learn every single song on it. And it is MUY underrated: what an incredible set of songs. Every one is a winner.

I have a lot of artists that helped shape me into the musician that I have become. It's a long list, for sure. But at the end of the day, the name at the top of that list is Tom Petty. For a whole lot of reasons. He was always into being in a band, which he kept together for most of his life. He was a hard working songwriter...he never stopped writing. He had many great hits, and he also had many underrated albums. He wrote songs for others, and he got to work with a list of artists that is as impressive a group of musical royalty as you could put together. He stood up for himself and his fellow musicians, and he stood up for his fans. And he did it all without ever seeming to be an asshole...Tom Petty was always a guy you just wanted to hang out with. And with me, his songs are always the stuff I turn up the most, and the music that makes me stop what I'm doing and really listen.

So, this thread is here for anyone who wants to share anything about Tom Petty...his songs, his albums, his really cool life. He died in 2017 at age 66. I hope that when it's my time, I can say that I came as close as I could to living life like Tom Petty did.

Here's to Tom Petty. 1950-2017. The coolest rock star of them all.

This song is so great. I always stop to listen to this. From the Heartbreakers 1999 album Echo. I play this in my band, and for me, it has all the things that made him such a great songwriter.
