Henry Hill becomes an "average schmuck" at the end because he no longer has ties to the mafia. It is clear that to him this is an inferior lifestyle, and it is clearly portrayed to the audience that this is an inferior lifestyle. It was generally pretty glorifying as far as I'm concerned, whether it meant to be or not.

I think the main reason I hate these crime films is because I live in an area in which the mafia is and always has been a very real thing - and believe me, the mafia really isn't as interesting as these movies try to make it seem. There's very little "whacking", the mafia is first and foremost an "alternative business" and killing everyone around you isn't a very sound business model.

2001 can be a real chore to watch and Kubrick as done much better

The Departed is great to watch and certainly isn't a chore, although if your up for it 2001 can be more rewarding.

Still Scorsese has done much better as well

I might need some more time on this 🤔

Oh and the video intro with Gimme Shelter! Man that song never gets old
