This is MJ Lenderman to me. I can't believe I don't love it (it's not bad though). Just the way it goes sometimes. The Fontaines DC record is the one that is getting love that I absolutely love. Probably my AOTY at this point.

More and more, I think it should be a mix of these two things. And I think Brat has both. Music that defines the times can almost be journalistic in a sense. Create a picture, etc.

I doubt anything will pass Brat on the AOTY aggregate, or even come close.

Fully agree they lowballed Wild God, that's my AOTY. I wasn't necessarily expecting it to hit #1 but I'd expect it be somewhere.

And yeah, Brat definitely was the song/album of the summer, but IMO that shouldn't affect it's ranking on a year-end list. I feel like year-end lists should be more about quality of music (obviously based on the opinions of the authors) rather than cultural impact.

I'm incredibly impressed that these are being entered into the BEA database as Recognized Charts so quickly! Looking forward to how the Pitchfork list shakes things up (among other things, the Mount Eerie epic finally entered the all-time top 10K today, and its top 10 Pitchfork ranking should raise it significantly higher).

I'm also surprised that all of these publications have posted their end-of-year lists so early. Didn't most of them used to wait until at least mid-December?

And looks like Pitchfork's Top 50 list is up. Actually not too bad of a list, I can kinda dig it. Don't think I'd have Brat that high, but seems like everyone is ranking Brat super super high (I liked it and all, but top 5 of the year is a bit of a stretch for me).

The experience is no match for reading articles on the publishers website but hey ho. If you wanna do that, do that.

Pitchfork released their 100 Songs of The Year, usually one of my favourites— while it's certainly freckled with popular tracks, for the most part it's an odd and obscure(ish) selection with a few more headscratchers than usual. Going through the tracks I don't know (around half) and hoping for a gem or two. No hard opinion at the moment. Must familiarize myself with Mello Buckzz first.

Considering I thought 365 would be vying for their #1 spot, I'm surprised it isn't there at all. Would've liked Baddy on the Floor to make the cut too. Likewise anything by Vampire Weekend or Mount Eerie. Really glad Death & Romance made the list, but would've liked it considerably higher.

Any obvious gems in here? Most of the bottom half is going over my head.

Figured it's that time of year again to create a hub for all the end-of-year album lists coming out. Here's a few:

Rolling Stone's 100 Best Albums of 2024 which is, as usual, very predictable and mostly boring with a UI that will make your eyes bleed

NPR's 50 Best Albums of 2024 which has some cool picks

New Yorker's 20 Best Albums of 2024 which is actually kinda sorta halfway decent

Stereogum's 50 Best Albums of 2024 which definitely has some solid picks

Paste's Top 100 Albums of 2024 which is a VERY solid list

and of course, the coolest list of the year each year, The Quietus's 100 Best Albums of 2024

Overall, lots of (fairly predictable) praise for Brat and Cowboy Carter, also lots of (slightly more surprising but cool) praise for Waxahatchee and MJ Lendermann
