This is only for studio albums:

Joy Division
My Bloody Valentine
The Stooges (if you don't consider The Weirdness as a 'real' Stooges album)
Captain Beefheart (if you don't consider Bluejeans and Guaranteed as 'real' Beefheart albums)
Nick Drake
Arcade Fire
The Velvet Underground (if you don't consider Squeeze as 'real' VU albums)
The Beatles
Kanye West
Sex Pistols
Led Zeppelin
Jeff Buckley
Jimi Hendrix

IMO, a perfect catalog is the catalog where there's no album which is not at least 'very good'.

I would like to say The Stooges, but The Weirdness is just godawful. The best examples I can think of are My Bloody Valentine, Pavement, Pixies, Nick Drake, and Joy Division.

Not sure if I might have already said this on this thread, but if the latest Shins album being released in a couple weeks is anywhere near as good as the first 3, they will have a perfect catalogue of 4 albums so far in my opinion. And a couple killer b sides as well.

My bloody valentine, nick drake, nirvana, velvet underground, stooges, and joy division all come to mind with those strange/short but brilliant careers that left behind immaculate albums. Booooringgg... Zzzzz.... To me a great catalogue comes with arches of wild success and miserable failures.

But when I think musical catalogues semantically at least, I think of cold hard song lists. Even though the fab four had a few minor misteps, looking at their catalogue of songs, like alphabetically or something, is pretty unreal. The standard classic rock bands Floyd, Queen, Zep, Who, Stones, etc all have those thrilling lists of hit after hit.

Either way, like I said, I really value a nice career arc with some peaks and valleys, Reed, Bowie, Waits, Beefheart, Pop, Zappa, Radiohead, The Smashing Pumpkins, Springsteen, Kate Bush, and particularly Pink Floyd all really impress me with what they encompassed.

Everyone obviously fails though when compared to the epic sprawl of greatness that is the career of KISS
Only because you are wrong again. Still. Have a Merry Christmas. You guys are first to it.

Don't give me the ole "patpatstab" k that ain't nice. What do you mean "again"?

Are you telling me you've never been wrong before?

EDIT: And technically it was a stabpatpat.

🤣 When you put it that way...yes I've been wrong many times (I thought you were talking about a specific instance) and I'm not wrong this time! You just don't agree (just as I think AC/DC are about as far from a perfect catalogue as you can get) You have a Merry Christmas too

Thank you. And while you celebrate Christmas down there with your fried kangaroo or whatever happens to be the tradition, please note that I never claimed AC/DC have a perfect catalog.

PS. I took the liberty of removing an unnecessary a, changing the initial w to a W, as well as making some other minor adjustments in your post when quoting it in order to improve readability.

sorry my computer died a few days ago and im having to type everything from my phone which is kinda annoying. It also means my music collection went with it 😢 but i've given it to a friend and hopefully he can fix it....but for now i'm stuck with my (admittedly ample) CD collection.

Hm..Didn't think about that. He does have Watch The Throne though 😕 , which wasn't a flop, but it's not up to standards.

Same with Graduation 🤔

But his other 4 albums are great 😄

And I forgot about Simon & Garfunkel while making my list. They have a pretty perfect catalog 😄

I mean, I think they were by far the most consistent band through the 70s and 80s. Yes, there were bands that were bigger than them in both decades, but I'm not sure there were any bands that were bigger than them in the 70s who were also bigger than them in the 80s. Even I will admit that several of their albums are far from perfect, but with the possible exception of Rush I would have to say that no other band was as consistent as them for as long as them.

Bruce comes to mind as a contender to Queen on that one (bigger in 70's and also bigger in 80's), although personally I'd say Queen was the better of the two in the 70's and Bruce the better in the 80's. AC/DC might also be considered here. None of the three has a perfect catalog though. Queen have Hot Space and arguably A Day at the Races, Bruce has Human Touch and Lucky Town, AC/DC have For Those About to Rock and Fly on the Wall.

You really think A Day at the Races was their worst next to Hot Space? I'd probably put ADATR above everything they did in the 80s and most of what they did in the 70s (ANATO and Sheer Heart Attack being obvious exceptions).

But of those three Queen was by far the best, in my opinion, but that's mostly because I can't stand Bruce and because, in my opinion, AC/DC was just good, not great. They're all definitely contenders in terms of popularity, though.

I have A Night at the Opera as their second and Sheer Heart Attack as their fifth (Jazz #1, News #3, I #4). Queen II is arguably less good than ADATR. Neither is bad but not on the same level as their great work. Either way, Hot Space (while not as awful as some claim) is enough to keep them from a perfect catalog. Also, Queen may be one of the best bands if you look at their total output but they never really made a masterpiece album, just very good stuff.

Well, looking at my chart, I obviously disagree that they never made a masterpiece album, but to each his own, I suppose.

In my opinion, Sheer Heart Attack and ANATO were absolute masterpieces. ADATR would be a masterpiece if it weren't for Tie Your Mother Down, and Queen II has some of their best work with only a few weak tracks that bring it down. News of the World and Jazz are about on the same level for me. They both have some really great songs and a lot of not so great songs, but overall they're both very good albums. Their debut, Hot Space, A Kind of Magic, and Made in Heaven were by far their weakest efforts, though even those certainly had their highlights (I honestly love Heaven for Everyone from MiH and Action This Day from HS). Flash Gordon I don't even consider a true "album", but I can get into some of it. Everything else (The Game, The Works, The Miracle, and Innuendo) were all pretty great, but they were more collections of songs than actual albums.

So yeah, the way I see it, they had a pretty damn solid/consistent discography, but of course not perfect. Of course, I thought everything The Beatles put out before Rubber Soul was total shit, and I've never liked much Radiohead aside from OK Computer, so I guess I wouldn't really be willing to call ANY band's discography perfect.
