Confession, I'm one of those who hasn't seen The Human Condition Trilogy. I know, I know. It's on the watchlist, it's just that 9-hour runtime and my work schedule. I'll get to it some day. I haven't seen 18% of our list, so it's not the only heavy-hitter I haven't got to yet. In time. Looking at our last 1940s poll 8 years ago ( https://boxd.it/NZrw ), I haven't seen 32% of that list, so I'll have some work cut out for me when that gets up and running.

And yeah, that's what I mean by intimidating. I don't blame people for having not seen it. Luckily, it can be broken up into it's three parts. It's not a marathon by any means.

Really awesome list. The biggest surprise for me is that The Bad Seed, Sudden Fear, Lola Montes and A Star is Born actually made the list. Because for the longest time the only votes they had were from me, but then toward the end they suddenly got a few more votes. Which I still didn't think would be enough, but it was. Another surprise is how many were New to the list. Or is it usual that there's that many?

I'm sure there are folks out there who'd rank Ozu as one of three best directors of the 50s. He was certainly consistent, and a treat for those who get engrossed by his stories and minimalist style. He just isn't quite for me, with a few exceptions. I went through Ozu's 50s works years ago, when I watched about 2 of his films per week until I was done. In hindsight, it was a mistake to watch his films in such rapid succession, probably resulting in them feeling "jumbled together", in my mind anyway. It's better to take in his movies at a slower pace.

Anyway, one film from Ozu and one film from Preminger seems unfair, now that I think about it. Both had a great track record this decade. And I forgot Preminger played the villain in Stalag 17. That's something.

I think we whipped up a decent set here. I think your comments on Ozu might (unfortunately) be true... his films can get slightly jumbled. Might have something to do with it. Still, masterful. Love his style. Wish someone else would give it a shot honestly. A modern take on Ozu could be a real treat.

I watched 4 Ozu films as part of this and while Tokyo Story is head and shoulders above, all of his films were really special. Each one that I saw dealt with some sort of family trauma but in very different ways.

Also the way he shoots and frames interiors was incredible. Even in Floating Weeds he gets exterior shots (looking down alleys) in the same way. I was constantly in awe of how he made the mundane living room, mahjong den, or noodle bar look and feel beautiful.

And CA Dreamin for the comparison.

Of the films I've seen, the ones that rose or fall (or added or dropped out) between the old and new list seem appropriate me, with the exception of The Human Condition I & II. I'm surprised those fell as much as they did.

You know what? I kept feeling this way during the poll process. The main issue was that neither really appeared on too many lists— just happened to be that the lists they were on, they were high up on. The Human Condition II is ahead of Alice In Wonderland despite the fact it appeared on half the amount of entries as the latter. I thought they'd both land the top 50. It's a slightly intimidating trilogy, so I get it, but I'm hoping those who haven't seen the set give it a shot.

We really didn't like Jacques Tati much this time around. One of his films dropped 56 places. And the other dropped at least 60 (we don't know how many for sure cause it missed the list entirely, the highest-ranked film on the old list that didn't return).

2. Billy Wilder lost Sabrina and The Seven Year Itch from the old list...and still had 5 on the new one. He had 7 on the old list. Incredible. Out of his 5 on the new one, 4 are in the top 25.

3. Only Kurosawa and Hitchcock are in the same league imo. 3 films each in the Top 10. Wow. Yeah, Wilder, Hitchcock, and Kurosawa were the best of the 50s hands down.

4. Well, I'm a big fan of Otto Preminger, whom I'd like to say is among the decade's best. But I understand his films don't have as high a reputation, except Anatomy of a Murder. I put 6 of his movies on my personal list, and only one made the cut. I would have liked to see one or two more, but oh well.

5. We were talking about 50s Westerns. Personally I think the 50s was a great decade for the genre. Yet only 5 made the list. Even weirder is the fact that not a single one was directed by Anthony Mann (um, what?). At least High Noon got a high placement.

6. Great list!

I also noticed a slight decline for Tati 🙁 — by all means, perhaps I'm also to blame for that... he didn't land particularly high on my submission— but was still hoping he'd appear a little more. I don't have any problem revealing that Monsieur Hulot's Holiday ended up at #149. It was quite the drop.

Sabrina was regularly floating around the 90-110 mark, but didn't get a lot of love near the end. Just slipped in the last week or so really. The Seven Year Itch appeared on some lists, but really never gained traction. Wasn't even in the top 250 believe it or not.

And man... Wilder vs Hitchcock vs Kurosawa is tight. That'd be a fight. I'm not even sure who I'd pick. (Total oeuvre, not just 50s, etc).

Otto Preminger only has one film on the board, but he was in a second! 😜 (He acts in Stalag 17).

My small argument in favor of 12 Angry Men: I'm generally not a huge fan of legal dramas (Anatomy of a Murder and Witness for the Prosecution are much lower on my list than overall, although I thought they were fine and with solid performances). 12 Angry Men shouldn't be good. There's a bunch of actors who barely did anything else, the cinematography is nothing special, all but 2 minutes of the film take place entirely within one room. But there's no other legal drama like this. Most of them focus on the courtroom, the lawyers and judge(s), the people on trial and the witnesses. I don't think I've seen another film that focuses on the jury. And this is ENTIRELY the jury. You don't know anything about the young man being tried for murder other than what the jurors know. And you get to see 12 strangers argue over this young man's life. While I may not make the argument that it's an amazing piece of cinema, it's an amazing story, amazing acting performances, and based on an incredible play. It really shouldn't appeal to me, but every time I watch I'm completely captivated the whole time.

Anyway, every jury duty I've experienced isn't nearly as glamorous. There's always some ass who thinks they're being a hero like juror #8 when really they're just delaying the proceedings for no reason. And there's always lots more juror #7s who just want to get home as quickly as possible.

Even on the old list, the only other one I see was Floating Weeds at #98. As for me, he isn't exactly my flavor of green tea. I agree his films are mostly solid, but they're very repetitive. They have similar plot-lines, camera angles, cast of actors/actresses...even the titles of his movies are barely distinguishable from each other. They mostly fall in my 7/10 to 8/10 range. But the only two that stand out to me are Tokyo Story and Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice. I put those high on my list, with Early Spring towards the bottom. But yeah, I'm more of a Mizoguchi and Kurosawa fan, who had 4 and 5 films on my personal list, including my #1, that undeservedly landed at only #50.

Other than 12 Angry Men, which is certainly a good film but imo very overrated here and letterboxd, I think this is an excellent top 10. Maybe the most worthy (in my estimation) of all the top 10s we’ve had? I’d have to review and compare the others to be sure but it’s great and 11-100 is also full of great selections.

Touch of Evil at 19 is of course too low but that’s a minor complaint

Thanks Afterhours— and I appreciate you pointing out that mistake earlier 🫠

Yeah, 12 Angry Men is the highest-rated film of the 50s on LB, as well as the most popular, which is an interesting distinction. I'm quite fond of it, and believe it deserves a spot in our top 10, but I would've been disappointed had it been in the top 2.

The Bad Seed, our #100, is fittingly the lowest LB-ranked film represented, but it's still a pretty solid film, so. (I'm glad it made the cut). Says something about the quality of the list.

Vertigo, our #1, really isn't as popular on Letterboxd. Out of our top 100, it ranked #36 on LB's average rating scale.

The highest-rated film on LB not included was Rio, Zona Norte, closely followed by Tokyo Twilight and Good Morning. Ozu did kinda get stiffed... I mean, dude landed a top 10 film, but that's it, and he has 7-8 great films from the decade. Not sure if he's just not BEA's taste, or he just got a little unlucky with the rankings in lieu of other Japanese films, but I thought we'd see at least three films from him on the board. Great job Hayden!

Something doesn't seem right though. Currently I have 23 movies listed as new to the current list, but only 22 movies that left the old list. I must've mislabled one. I will edit it once I spot it. And let me know if I made other inaccuracies.

That being said, I messed my tidbit post up. I missed The Cranes are Flying being on the original 😨 ... the highest new entry is actually Ashes & Diamonds. Fixed.

Something doesn't seem right though. Currently I have 23 movies listed as new to the current list, but only 22 movies that left the old list. I must've mislabled one. I will edit it once I spot it. And let me know if I made other inaccuracies.

EDIT: Found it, I initially labled Los Olvidados as new to the current list, when it was 8 spots away on the old list.

Tidbits & Stats

Annual breakdown—
50: 10
51: 8
52: 8
53: 8
54: 10
55: 11
56: 10
57: 12
58: 9
59: 14

Countries represented: 11
Best Picture Winners: 4
Palme D'or Winners: 4
Animated Films: 1
Documentaries: 1

Highest ranking film not on the original list—
Ashes and Diamonds (#51)

This list features 4 films over 3 hours long (the longest of which is Ben-hur at 222 minutes).

The director who appeared on the list with the most films is Alfred Hitchcock (6), but in this contested fight for the 50s crown, here are the stats of notable director representation—

6 films: Hitchcock
5 films: Billy Wilder, Kurosawa
4 films: Satyajit Ray, Kazan
3 films: Bergman, Nicholas Ray, Kenji Mizoguchi, Bresson, Ophüls

—Nobody had the same #1 film, and everybody's #1 film made the list.
—Vertigo appeared on every list.
—Dual Palme D'or & Best Picture winner Marty was... umm... nowhere close
—Japan holds a fair share of the list, with 15 entries represented

Personal notes—

I'm very fond of our final result, but I still have a small snub-list of films I truly believe should be on here—
-Kanal
-Crazed Fruit
-The Flavour of Green Tea Over Rice
-Good Morning
-La Pointe Courte

(All very good films that I hope BEA watches at somepoint or another)

I apologize for not creating custom posters this time around. I haven't had the time. If I think of some ideas, I'll do it though.
