It obviously depends on what sort of music you are into but these guys produce great, jamming albums, with stellar fuzzy guitar and are fantastic live

This track is from their best album (IMO)

the tracks average out at around 10 minute each. Great stuff

junodog4 wrote:

Listening to Wilco, The Grateful Dead, Kingg Crimson etc... got me thinking about the long jams on some of their albums. I'm not talking about the jams one experiences in concert, but the ones on studio music, especially standard albums. I have to admit that many times I end up skipping over them, and I'm wondering about that.

My first thought is that I wonder if I would appreciate them more if I was a more accomplished musician... I consume music like a glutton, but I don't play much; just concert band in school, unpleasant piano lessons as a child, and failed attempts to learn guitar (many broken fingers from sports). I think I feel the same way about prog rock and modern jazz - would I appreciate the musical 'gymnastics' more if I appreciated the technique? Do musicians love to hear jams?

My second thought is that this opinion does not apply to live music (within reason). Sometimes the endless solos at concerts gets tiring, but when the band and crowd have great energy, jams can be electric. I suppose that it's often hard to capture that in a studio album.

I'm curious to hear what others think.

Totally!!! The same goes for guitar virtuoso albums like Satriani and Vai. Even though I'm a metalhead, I could never get into albums like theirs, and I suspect it's because I'm not a musician.

Although I do love the Dead now! ðŸ˜... But they're pretty much the only jam band I do like. And I prefer their more Americana albums like Workingman's Dead and American Beauty.
