No Beach Boys career summary would be complete without the word "Surf" and since this was their breakout single - it makes sense to include it. For 4 years their songs would essentially be: Breezy, about girls and sung by Mike Love. Luckily for everyone - that changed.

When boys became men. The Beach Boys crafted the near-perfect Pet Sounds and with it "God Only Knows", possibly the most widely praised song of all time.

Unfortunately what could have been a long and rewarding career (for both Band and fans) collapsed when The Smile Sessions did. And although The Beach Boys released 17 more albums of varying quality (some of them very good!) Brian's involvement rapidly lessening (he is conspicuously missing from the above video - a performance of his own song) meant that The Beach Boys full potential was never reached again. Lucky for us "The Smile Sessions" were released last year. There are better songs off of The Smile Sessions but I think if you ask most people to name a Beach Boys song they will say "Good Vibrations".

Except that One Hundred Years was already completely goth and Lullaby is pretty goth as well. Then after Lullaby they basically never went goth again unless you count Bloodflowers. Actually you probably just need to go back and relearn you Cure timeline.

It wasn't really a timeline but a summary of the artist in three songs.

I chose One Hundred Years because this was the raw start for the Cure and showed how aggressive the Cure can be. I could have chosen a punk-era Cure song but the real Cure starts for me on Pornography.

The Lovecats is the song that people quote to me when I say that the Cure is one of my favourite bands of all time. It is a quintessential pop song of the 80s and musically removed from Pornography/Faith/Seventeen Seconds.

Lullaby was chosen in response to Disintegration being their magnum opus. I could have chosen Pictures Of You or other singles lifted from the album but this seemed to fit. Even though the gothic lyrics and musicality still exists, this song is the combination of gothic rock and radio pop.

3 songs to chose is hard for the Cure but this is what sums up their career for me. Gothic rock, sickly sweet pop and alternative chart toppers.

Not to double post, but I'd also like to throw up my list for iconic LA punkers, the Germs!

-Forming (I mean DUH; but beyond the convenient title, as only single/first release in the Germs' discography, it showcases everything the Germs would become (in)famous for: almost cryptically politicized lyrics, unrivaled egoist-nihilist bragadoccio [I have no clue how to spell that], and of course, interminably sloppy delivery and production quality)
-Manimal (the definitive nihilist anthem of the 1970's, and also a helpful showcase for Darby's truly poetic lyrical bent)
-Golden Boys (controversial to include a pick that isn't even technically a Germs song or even a Darby Crash one, but the lyrics were Darby's, and after being covered by everyone from the Dicks to NOFX to fucking Pavement, it's a song that cements his and the Germs' influence on punk and really the whole world of rock music)

I'm not sure how to work this quoting thing (I SWEAR I've got HTML enabled, but it never seems to work!) but I'm afraid I must disagree with the Nirvana 3 submitted. The lack of Bleach representation is egregious! In fact, strange as it is, if I excluded one album, it might be Nevermind. A list where I forced myself to include a track might look something like this:
-Love Buzz (to encapsulate both their early heavy sound and their love of covering foreigners)
-Smells Like Teen Spirit (I mean DUH)
-All Apologies (just a fitting career closer, really; a reflection on the way their overmassive success from SLTS and Nevermind permanently scarred Kurt)

But if I'm really being honest with myself, it looks more like this to me:
-Negative Creep (noisy, angry, and pretty fucking slap-dash to boot)
-Very Ape (represents a leap in lyrical creativity; this is the album Kurt said he had been waiting to make with Nirvana, and this song is definitely a hilight)
-Where Did You Sleep Last Night? (this is the token representative of his... eclectic repertoire of covers; he could take any song he really loved and make it his own--he was really one of the first acts to be so entrenched and enmeshed in the history of music and that's probably because the 90's spawned the first bands who had to contend with the canonization and fossilization of the first real rock and pop records [I always thought it was cute that "Meet the Beatles" was Kurt's favorite Beatles album...])

That being said, I think either list deserves an Epilogue in a song like "Verse Chorus Verse" from the With the Lights Out box set. Sometimes what makes me saddest about his suicide is that, looking at the stuff he was working on when it happened, a new album from Nirvana might have rivaled In Utero as one of their greatest.

Well, I think they do 😄

Love Me Do has the early Beatles-vibe to it. It's catchy, pop-rock, fun, about love, clever at times. All You Need Is Love would also work though, I guess.

A Day In The Life shows the Beatles psychedelic-side, and their brilliant song writing. The ending also shows how smart the Beatles were, and how fun they were at times. Undeniably one of the greatest songs ever too.

Come Together shows Ringo's better side, and also has great guitar work, and great a great catchy hook. ... 🤔 I dunno. It just seemed to fit.

But, this is just my opinion. What would your 3 be?

I just did one for Prince. I will have 2 think about this one for the Beatles were 1,000 X's greater. 🤔
