Thank you everyone who submitted both their nominations and votes. We didn't receive that many, so I'm not sure I'll run this type of tournament again, but here are the results.

There were a number of ties along the way, even from the very beginning. It was (largely) predictable, with the sole exception perhaps of the Cowboy Junkies making it to the Quarterfinals despite being the 22nd seed.

In the final, Neil Young beat out both Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene to take the crown.

If you want more detailed explanations of the results or the voting process, let me know.
I also have the images of the brackets for everyone who voted; if you are interested in viewing yours to see how your list translates into the bracket, let me know.

Thanks again!

It's just to make things fair, I included 34 entries instead of 32. If I remember from another thread, you follow NCAA March Madness, right? Well, consider these four artists the wildcard entries vying for the last two spots in the tournament (I think that analogy holds?).

So, you would include them in your list just like any of the other 30 artists, but I'll be doing that match up first, kind of like a round robin to determine the top 2 artists of those 4, before moving on to the main tournament.

Hrm, I hope that makes sense.

And yes, if you want to include some videos or links, that's fine... I just don't want this thread to be overloaded with them, so it's easier for me to find the votes. But thank you for asking 😄

If you always want Saga to win, put them at the top of your list.

I'm sure you are, but you don't need to be smart.

Basically, of the artists in the tournament (and I'll list them below in order just to make it easier... I just didn't want the original post to be so long), put them in order from most favourite to least favourite, including ties, and omit the ones you don't like or know. Then I'll do the rest. 😁

1 Arcade Fire (1)
2 Broken Social Scene (9)
3 Godspeed You! Black Emperor (7)
4 Neil Young (2)
5 Rush (4)
6 The New Pornographers (11)
7 The Band (5)
8 Joni Mitchell (3)
9 Wolf Parade (20)
10 Destroyer (12)
11 City and Colour (44)

15 Feist (17)
16 Leonard Cohen (6)
17 Fucked Up (71)
18 Headstones (200+)
19 NoMeansNo (47)
20 Pilate (Pilot Speed) (84)
21 The Dears (79)
22 Cowboy Junkies (18)

Best Canadian Artist - Voting & Results

Thank you to everyone who submitted nominations!

Here is the final ranking of the top artists. The number in parentheses is their current rank on the Top-ranked bands from Canada page. Artists were ranked first by total number of points. In the case of a tie, they were ranked by highest individual rank, and then alphabetically according to their name on BEA. The cutoff was 6 points, so at least the top half of everyone's list made it in.

Here is the tournament bracket.

You will notice four artists (rank 31-34) listed separately at the bottom. Since these four tied for the final two spots, and I don't want to include people simply based on alphabet, they will compete for the final two spots (#31 & 32 in the bracket). So, I will run these matches first (all four against each other, top two in each list get a vote), and then put the two winners into those two spots in the tourney, in alphabetical order.

What you need to do

List these 34 artists from your favourite to your least favourite. If there is a tie between two artists, just put "=" before the number/name so that I know. What this means is that if those two artists go against each you, you will abstain from voting in that match. If you really don't like or know an artist, feel free to leave it off the list entirely. Also, your votes don't need to be in the same order as your nominations.

Confused? Here's an example.

Sample list

1 Arcade Fire
2 Joni Mitchell
3 Sloan
4 Metric
5 Jann Arden
6 Nelly Furtado
=7 The Guess Who
=7 Destroyer
=7 The Unicorns
8 Feist
9 Rush
10 Wolf Parade
=11 Stars
=11 The New Pornographers
12 Cowboy Junkies
13 Pilate
14 Neil Young
and nothing for anyone else.

In the pre-tourney, the top two of Jann Arden, Metric, Saga, and Sloan would be Sloan (3) and Metric (4). These two would then be in the main tournament, and would go in spots 31 (Metric) and 32 (Sloan) alphabetically.

In the main tourney, match 1 would be Arcade vs. Sloan. Arcade would get the vote, being ranked higher, and advance.
match 2 would be Joni vs. ASMZ. Joni would get the vote since ASMZ is not listed.
match would be Wolf Parade vs. Big Sugar. WP advances
etc., etc.

Click here for a visualization of this example.

You'll notice that in instances of a tie (or abstention), both artists advance together to the next round, since they are of equal rank. In the match of two ties (Band/Alanis vs. Destroyer/Unicorns), the higher ranked tie advanced.

I hope that everything is clear. You will have until midnight Pacific Standard Time January 30th to get in your votes by responding to this thread. I will aim to have the results tabulated and posted on February 1st.

If you have any questions, just ask.

Thanks!
