I think a mix of them being made one of the poster boys of the "Hot Topic" culture, their fans, and their booming popularity. Just like the huge cross-section of people that believe that Green Day is complete garbage. Which is pretty misguided, because I think it's pretty clear that bands like MCR, Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, and latter Green Day get a bad rap because of the culture. While they aren't among the greatest bands in the world, they are head and shoulders above all those bands I listed earlier. Hell, Fall Out Boy is actually pretty catchy.

I've never heard a credible explanation of what makes My Chemical Romance one of the worst bands ever. The loathing that they inspire completely flabbergasts me.

I think the OP's criteria is pretty spot-on. Of course there are millions of bands that are worse than the ones listed, but it's not such a bad thing because no one likes them anyway.

Anyway, I think Nickelback is a disgrace to music.

We cab debate such a list all day, but most of the artists on the OP's list are indeed pretty horrible. Agree that some don't belong... Duran Duran honestly wasn't a bad band at all IMO. But in his opinion they are, which is fine.

Having a worst list isn't nearly as tragic as members who fly around rating bands and albums they don't actually know just to seem knowledgable, pad their own user stats and degrade bands they don't know just to make their own faves look better. We can pretend those people aren't here but it's clear they are lurking. To me that is this site's version of a crime.

I'm surprised Yoko Ono is on the original posted list. I'm not a fan of her work, but her attempts at pushing the boundaries of music can be appreciated (e.g. Toilet Piece) as much as some of Cage's work can

Voted for Nickelback. No brainer for me.

But I agree that some of these bands/artists you listed should in no way be listed in any "worst" list. Most of them have been mentioned already, but I didn't see anyone mention Dave Matthews Band. I understand his demeanor annoys people, and he has one of those voices, like Billy Corgan, that some people love and others hate, but his band should never be on a list like this. One of the most talented ensembles in rock/popular music today. Many many fantastic and original songs. I can understand not liking them, but you have to respect their talent, which is undeniable.

I don't think we'll ever know the 50 'worst'. There are millions of bands that you don't know about that probably suck. We'll only be ever to make 'most overrated' or sumthin like that.

For me, it came down to nickelback, limp bizkit and creed, but ultimately goes to creed as i've never found anything redeemable whatsoever out of creed. Nickelback is simple harmless rock tripe and limp bizkit at least had that george michael cover i can laugh at.
