definitely agree with you - a lot of otherwise great songs that were recorded in the '80's are spoilt because of the recording techniques of the time.
But do you use dated as a negative term, or just an obersavation for the fact that 80's keyboard is old fashioned?

I think the best examples of this that I can think of are Bruce Springsteen and Warren Zevon.

I love the music of both of these artists. But, in the 80's, both used the same terrible keyboard sounds beyond piano and organ...that sound you hear in songs like "Hungry Heart", "Dancing In The Dark", "Gorilla You're A Desperado", "The Envoy", and much of the rest of what they were doing during that period. I think that the keyboards on The River, Born In The USA, Tunnel Of Love, Bad Luck Streak In Dancing School, Sentimental Hygiene and The Envoy sound extremely dated...but it doesn't take away from what I feel are the quality of the songs, and for me, it doesn't reduce the value of that music. I just think it sounds...a bit out of place. Not as cool as it was when the albums were brand new.

Dated.

But would you prefer those songs without that particular keyboard sound today?

I don't think so. I prefer them as I remember them. It's weird, but it's not a flaw I want corrected.

Romanelli wrote:

The sound of keyboards in rock during the 1980's sounds very dated to me.

To ME that is THE perfect example. Though it wasn't only the keyboards but also the beat boxes and sometimes even the guitar sounds too. It was the birth of digital music and while it was necessary to get to where we are the technology was just not able to produce that had the full dynamic range of real instruments. It was like watching a Blue Ray disc on an old TV screen of the wrong format. Sure I have never seen an image so precise but something is wrong with it.

No surprise that what got us out of the 80s was 1) grunge (a reaction against music that sounded like it was made in a sterile lab) & 2) the unplugged movement (a need to remind about the songwriting buried under the sound).

As I said in a lot of places I hate the 80s and that is one of the main reasons. I am always amazed when some artist or some hit from the 80s is played using today's technology and suddenly I realise it was not that bad.

But do you use dated as a negative term, or just an obersavation for the fact that 80's keyboard is old fashioned?

Conversely, I can still listen to Zeppelin and think they sound fresh and not dated at all. Maybe it has something to do with production, but I'm really not sure. It's just something I hear with some bands and don't hear with others. Now that it's been brought up I wish I could come up with exactly why some music sounds old and some doesn't.

Much of the Beatles music was recorded in mono.

Maybe that has a bit 2 do with it ?

Yup that's definitely a possibility. Also, The Beatles used a lot of heavy harmonizing, and for me bands that use a ton of harmonizing sound a bit more dated too, so that could also have something to do with it. Either way I've basically given up on trying to love The Beatles. I greatly respect them, but I just don't love their music.

Dated is usally used to say a band or music album has gone bad. However I see it more often used like a fine wine. People keep the albums on the shelf for long enough and people would call them classics. What is considered the mainstream now will be the fine wine of the future and roughly half of the top albums of the year for the last five will be forgotten.

Or maybe people have grown over that...? Grown over it and Dark Twisted Wonderful Fantasy thingy will be as big in the pop music canon as Sgt Peppers outing? 🤔

Don't include me Kangaroo boy 🫵

It was Naples who once again woke up and started stalking me on here again 🤐

But, you already know that, don't you kangaroo bot ❓

Yes, yes, yes, why certainly you know it well. For he has been obsessed with me for over a year now. But still Kangaroo boy pretends like he does not.

Quite sad really, a kangaroo without courage 2 stand up 2 the big bad robot 🙁

But then again, It would seem that out of over 12,000 members, I am the only one who so does.

I was only reminding Naples of what the site administrator (your boss kangaroo boy) has already told Naples.

Yet obviously Naples continues 2 ignore albummaster.

You want "irony" kangaroo boy ❓

Do ya, do ya really 😁

O.K. just for you I will.

The REAL "irony" of it all is that

YOU

Are not doing your job and doing something about

NAPLES

When

ALBUMMASTER (your boss)

Hired you 2 do just that very thing.

Yet you side with Naples against the owner of this site and get up in my face frequently with Pm's and in the forum.

Great stuff hey kangaroo boy 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣
