Vladimir Vysotsky ('лади́мир Сем'нович 'ысо́цкий)

Soviet folk singer with one of my favorite voices of all time. I have a couple of his records in the mail and im getting all pumped up.

Link

^ also one of my favorite songs of all time.

Soviet music and soviet cinema (not really on topic but whatever) is criminally underrated.

Bjork and Kurt Cobain '

but seriously...

There are numerous European (most Scandinavian) metal bands that sing in their native tongues: Ulver, Burzum, Darkthrone, Taake, and early Dimmu Borgir to name a few.

A couple of years Damon Albarn did a project in Mandarin Chinese called Monkey: Journey to the West. That was pretty good, very different as well.

Other then that I'm a big Jacques Brel fan, he's been mentioned a few times on this.

Carla Bruni as well.

And even though most of its in English Paul Simon's Graceland is outstanding!

I am sure you heard some good stuff sung in german, russian, japanese, arabic, spanish, etc...

In your face America:
Warsaw Village Band, Tworzywo Sztuczne, Fisz, Maria Peszek, Raz Dwa Trzy, Abradab, Lao Che, Czeslaw Niemen, Salif Keita, Abdel Gadir Salim, Rammstein, Emilie Simon, Sebastian Telier, Paktofonika, Goran Bregovic's collaborators, Sigur Ros, Laibach, Lisa Ekdahl, Lhasa (Lhasa de Sela), Paavoharju, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Republika, Waglewski Fisz Emade, Beshodrom, Fanfare Ciocarlia, Manu Chao, Compay Segundo...

That few of many I could think of right now...

Yes, They have created own music style ➡ very popular here in Finland.

Are they STILL?
I haven't heard of them for a few years now
(I personally think their early stuff was better than the later work...)

Bo Sundstrom has made solo albums. New Orleans (2010) is the most recent BKO. I like the album Amerika (1996).

I guess it's only appropriate that I'm the one who keeps reviving this thread...

So lately I'm going through another phase of listening to a lot of ex yugo music, particularly stuff I haven't heard yet. Here are three songs I discovered just recently:

Link

god they're so amazing... Every new thing I listen by them is fantastic

a 1973 yugoslav classic. It's from a concept album, and I think I'm gonna have to get it soon... (then again, all of the songs are on youtube, so I'm not in a hurry)

Another band whose albums I have to listen to ASAP:

I'm not sure how many people actually care for the recommendations posted in this thread, but I still have many more to go 😜
Here's a song by a Croatian band called Stijene, from an album that is already in BEA database. It's called Let (Flight) and it's amazing, if you ask me. From 1982:

Another one, from 1984, by Luna. Also in BEA database (the only album they have made), but I haven't heard the album yet.. I really really need to get it ASAP...

Link

I think this one should appeal to a certain crowd on this forum

Guitar Vader (Best band name ever?)

They switch between singing in English and Japanese, but you can't really understand the lyrics anyways. They do have a pretty cool sound; sort of a Pixies-surf rock thing.
