A lot of long songs are made up of different sounding self-contained segments stuck together though. Some long songs have short moments of silence in them, where one idea ends and a new one starts, and some albums don't have any breaks between tracks, where the songs blend into each other.

But I get your point. To me, the question is: is this musical idea interesting enough to develop for over 10 minutes without losing vitality? Some are, and some aren't.

What I call a song (and the ones I like best) has a distinct beginning, middle and end - usually with verses and choruses and in some cases a key change!!

The albums I like generally don't! They ricochet through a series of bits of music each with a distinct beginning, middle and end. They don't have to be cohesive and one bit of music (lets call it a song) doesn't have to have any kind of connection with the next bit of music (again lets call it a song!). It just has to end at some point and something new starts immediately after.

Exceptions apply.... 😁

What is it with men and their obsession with length?

When it comes to music, I have the attention span of a goldfish with ADHD. 1 generally skip tracks that last more than about 5 or 6 minutes (usually when the wanky guitar solos start). Short and sweet is so much more fun! 🤣

The only exception that spings to mind instantly

'Deep Burnt' - Gilles Petersen

and that probably because it is akin to hypnosis!
