To name a view. I think Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells is a pretty obscure piece of work when you listen to the whole album and not just some excerpts. And a commercial success it was....:)

Real Real Real by Jesus Jones (from 1991's Doubt, #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #85 on the Hot 100 all-year chart for 1991, but no one ever remembers the song and calls JJ a one-hit wonder for Right Here, Right Now).

Misery by Soul Asylum (from 1995's Let Your Dim Light Shine, went to #1 on U.S. Modern Rock Tracks and #20 on the Billboard hot 100).

The Freshmen by The Verve Pipe (from 1996's Villains, #5 on Hot 100, #1 on Modern Rock, #21 on Hot 100 all-year 1997)

Why do you need to play commercially successful songs?

I had a friend whose band back in highschool got a standing ovation for Clutch's Electric Worry.

For the OP, I really don't see what kind of asshole doesn't see U2 as a "really popular" band. I think he just doesn't like them or sth. (As for Arcane Fighter, well who the hell are they anyway)

... okay it got to number 1 but I would bet more people have heard the music before that album (which didn't sell as well)

"L-O-V-E, i'll see ya later!" they had one really good album, but yeah, i don't expect anyone i meet on the street to know about them.

Maybe the album charts are a better place to look than the singles chart for music that's good but also sold well. The top 40 normally always stinks.

Pink Floyd is a good idea - I'll check to see what hits they had.
Oasis could be risky though, with songs like "Wonderwall" being way too overplayed.

My band and I had a little falling out over what songs to cover at a gig.

After suggesting some Arcade Fire and U2 our front man suspiciously came out that we were only allowed to play "really popular" songs. This, to him, meant my suggestions (despite performing better in the charts in some cases) all had to be dropped, whereas his (Paramour, Foo Fighters and Razorlight) could be kept.

This really wound me up as I knew it was just a way to get my song choices off the list.

Now I need to come up with some great obscure songs which also performed well in the charts to keep some really good music on the setlist. The more recent the better.
Any ideas?

I've so far suggested "No Surprises" by Radiohead which reached No. 4 in the UK - more than any of his suggestions.

All help will be much appreciated! 😁
