The Greatest Man That Ever Lived is up there with the best (and most creative) songs he's ever written. Just ignore the terrible rap intro.

Throw in the fucking vocal/snare interlude with the rap intro and I might agree with you. Unfortunately, the shit represents much too large of a percentage of the song, making it utterly irredeemable.

Wayne Coyne is an amazing person, but his personality can over-sell things. Fucking amazing person.

I'll definitely look into it when it comes out.

Okay, ideally, yes, this is how any artist would do it. Unfortunately, that's not always how the music industry works. There's a lot of pressure to get albums out sooner rather than later, and sometimes great (but not the best) is all you can muster.

Mean!
Oh and isn't the whole reason MBV took a 20+ year hiatus because they(he) knew that they could never make a better album than Loveless? or was that your point....

anyway, as someone who wants to release music (and I really have to get around to that soon) I personally would keep releasing music just because I love writing new music.

If I was a musician, there is no way in hell I would release and album that I didn't think was better than my last. I would always raise the bar. I'm not saying that the public will agree, but if I made a "pretty good" album in my eyes, I would tweak it and make it better.

If another MBV album gets released, I'll know that they think it's better than Loveless. It doesn't matter what you or i think of it.
I suppose my point is just that a band should believe that their newest effort can stand with the rest. Their new album should be the best current representation of them and where they're at. I don't have high hopes for the new Stone Roses because I don't think they believe they are going to come close to their debut. What's the point in thinking that? Set the bar and try to get over it.

I agree with that. It was the, "what is the point of making it if you don't think it's your best" It could still be really good! (And lets no forget the $$$'s)

Necharsian wrote:

Is it so wrong for him to think that this one will be better than the Soft Bulletin?

I don't think anyone had a major problem with that, although I agree with Lethalnezzle, it is probably just for the hype.

See, I think I'm now doing with you what I have a nasty habit of doing with my friends. That is, arguing over something that we fully agree on. I think you throwing in the word "best" is what threw me off. Of course no band would put out an album they didn't like (unless they were selling out), but I'm just saying that it's silly not to release an album of what you consider good material just because you don't consider it your best.

Totally.

Anyways, concerning the article, "religious music from the Future" concerned with "internal sadness about living/oblivion" sounds like a good idea to me. Then again, this is Wayne Coyne promoting his own bands album... Whether or not the album ends up being any good is impossible to predict, The Flaming Lips have gone up and down quality wise quite a bit throughout their career.

If I was a musician that's exactly what I WOULD say. I wouldnt put music out there that i didnt love. But then again, this is coming from someone who can't play a lick of any instrument.

Jhereko wrote:

I think the subjectivy of greatness is definitley important to keep in mind. One of those bands that say "If our next album isn't better than our last we may as well just quit" is Coldplay. Now their last album was Mylo Xyloto, I really don't think it's their best and I don't think almost anyone else (aside from Pitchfork 😕 ) does either. But I'm pretty sure Coldplay think it's their best (unless they've decided to quit and just haven't announced it 🙁 ).and nothing can prove that belief wrong. So basically, so long as there are no absolutes in music (and there never will be) the theory still stands (but as I said originally I don't wholeheartedly 100% agree with it).

Basically this is part of what I posted but better written and clearly explianed. If Coldplay say it is their best, then it is their best. Maybe most will say it is a poor effort and it might not be the most acclaimed in many years time but as long as they really believe they pushed themselves to put out what they believe is their best, they can have that. Just like it can be someones "favorite".

Maybe in the future they will change their minds too. Might not all agree either.
