I've had tinnitus as long as I can remember, and certainly for a long time before I ever heard the word. I even thought it was normal when I was a little kid.

I experience that sensation where outside sounds are suppressed (almost like one ear goes completely deaf) and the ringing intensifies every now and again. Doesn't last more than a few seconds, and seems to start in one ear, pass through the head, and exit the other ear.

I don't need silence to hear the ringing in my ears - I only need to be thinking of it and paying attention to it. Like right now when someone brings up tinnitus 🤣

I guess I knew that, and was rather referring to the feeling of pure silence. But anyways, this doens't really belong to a music forum anymore.

It does last for a brief period. The hairs in your ears (or something like them) are vibrating still from the pounding they took. Short term, you'll get over it. But if you do it over and over again (heavy metal roadie, jackhammer operator, jet aircraft repairman, high school music teacher) you'll suffer permanent damage to your ears, even hearing loss. Maybe give your ears small doses of Norwegian death metal at full volume.

I've listened to some abrasive music through my headphones at high volume today, and now I've recieved some kind of ringing in my ears - it feels like I have a plug in each ear which attenuates outer sounds and making them sound more flat while they increase this ringing sound. Has anybody else tried this? It haven't been going on for a long time yet, but I'm still a little worried that it could be something permanent. What I'd really like to hear is somebody who would tell me that it's something which will only last for a brief period.
