Maybe it's just because I've made a point to pay more attention but I think there have been more albums put out this year than in any of the last ten or so years. There have been mainstream albums that actually deserve their popularity (by Alabama Shakes, Best Coast and Santigold for example) along with great stuff from indie buzz-getters (King Tuff, Beach House, Screaming Females) and, as usual, plenty of quality efforts from virtual unknowns around the country (like CA's Shannon & the Clams, TX's Bobby Jealousy and MA's Katie Von Slicher) and beyond (if you like heavy, bluesy rock check out the new album by the Swedish band Graveyard).

Yeah, I kind of contradict myself there. What I really meant by that statement is that this year hasn't been great from what I have heard, but I haven't heard enough to evaluate the year itself.

This year hasn't been great, but I really haven't been following it. There are albums I like and others I don't like. Don't worry, I dislike Bloom as well, but not as much as that Grizzly album.

Here is a free (legal) live recording of Austin Peralta, the prodigious young jazz pianist and Brainfeeder recording artist who tragically passed away earlier this month. Didn't know where else to put it, so here will do. Enjoy.

Looks like the masses say this year is just "so-so". About 10 say "awesome!", about 10 say "sucks!" and about 10 say just "ok". Sounds about right, i suppose. (Too bad there wasn't a "tootsie roll" option.)

The Seer, Slaughterhouse, MANNER, Ekstasis and The Spectrum of Distraction are some really good albums released this year.

2012 has already kicked the shit out of last year and is all but guaranteed to best 2010.

Listened to WIXIW by Liars (really great!) and Gossemer by Passion Pit. Every new album I listen to I seem to like immediately.

I definitely second whoever brought up Cancer 4 Cure. This year's been shit though. Some of my favourites (Sigur Rós, Graham Coxon, and - most painfully - fun.) have really disappointed me. Hopefully September's hopefuls will pull it up.
