Hayden- I'm not really one to be able to contact on technicalities when it comes to music, but I'll take your word for it haha. How was listening to them on acid? That's something that's definitely on my bucket list. I've never liked GGITS that much, but I'm glad you do! And yeah, Us & Them would be sick live, it's just a great song.

That's ok. I guess the first step is just thinking about the music if you were playing it, and you gain a bit of respect by just doing that.

And time flies when you're on lsd 🤣 I've only taken it 5 times, but I barely remember a thing of it. And music kinda takes you places in your head, makes you see different colours. Kinda absorbs you. Not sure if this happens with all music, or just psychedelic stuff.

The Great Gig In The Sky is one of the most emotional displays of the acceptance of death. It's beautiful. 😢
tekin- I think that's a kind of silly criterion. Taste is something that is so subjective, and although I think that there is some music that is definitely better than other music (based on the fact that there is a slight consensus on most works), I think to simplify it that much is just naive. I don't think that your definition of boring is relevant in my case, I'm a big fan of lots of music similar to DSTOM. Wish You Were Here is one of my favorites, for example.

Taste isn't just subjective. The part of it that is subjective is your mood when you listen to sth and your expectations about it. It has an objective side to it as well, i.e. how much you can enjoy it as what it really is.

It's just never struck me the way many other albums have, Wish You Were Here among them. I actually liked WYWH the first time I heard it, which is odd, that usually doesn't happen when I listen to music.

DSOTM has got +1000 votes here, so it's not like you've changed much with your rating, but of course if everyone who thought it deserved a lower rating did the same, it would be a different story! I feel the same way with WYWH, I think it's a good album, but nowhere near as good as DSOTM.. every time I listen to it, it sounds like they've tried too hard to recreate a DSOTM by making even longer tracks and make them sound even more epic and deep!

I went to see Pharoahe Monch on acid and spent the whole time screaming at, cheering to, and generally bigging up this weird piñata thing in the crowd that I thought was him. My friend realised and pointed it out to me during the intro to 'Simon Says'. Understandably, my mind was blown. True story.
Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet (couldn't even stomach to finish the album on the first listen, next time I thought it was good but inferior to other Stones albums)
I agree with this mostly, but I do think there are certain limits for what the human brain can enjoy with music.

Yourselfisntsteam wrote:

I was saying that! I said "the lyrics don't effect my opinion". I generally try and ignore lyrics. I was just spouting "random thoughts" (I wrote that) on why I disagree that art should be easy to relate to in order to be powerful.Secondly, sometimes it seems like people are attaching meaning to the music based on the lyrics instead of the music.

Agree with this. When I can relate to music where I find the lyrics nonsensical, it's because I can find a meaning behind the music itself. I never attach meaning to the lyrics at first, only to the music (because that's what I listen to first, even with Bob Dylan).

Yourselfisntsteam wrote:

Perhaps this is some sort of bias, but I listened to it when I was 12, and I hadn't heard much music then. At first I loved it, but as I heard more music it lost some appeal. As I said, I think it is an enjoyable album....I just also have some issues that I think people should think about and consider.

Okay, that's interesting! I'll definitely take notice of what you've said here, but I still think it's one of the absolute greatest albums which deserves it spot. When that's said, I honestly don't think it has got enough durability to keep its spot on my chart, but for now it stays there.
We were listening through it together and he was constantly explaining what was so special compositionally about it. That included him comparing that one of the songs had the harmonical highlight just at the climax of the song to when you're cumming just at the same time as the girl 🤣 (I didn't know that actually happens though 😨 )
Shit I have created another debate! I'm sorry everyone.

I accept the possibility I don't get things as well! That guess is why I post...I get to see people's reactions...they might say something smart that makes me rethink my stance.....or they might say something stupid which makes me feel like I am even more right!

and wow that analogy..... 🤣
I did write that cliches are okay....If I feel they justify themselves somehow.
I think because of how the music industry works, people have a very distorted view on innovation, something even mildly different tends to get "difficult" and "experimental" thrown at it. Which is not really fair....music is only difficult based on familiarity I think. I am not asking for the wheel to be reinvented overtime I hear something, if I did I would spend all day listening to electro acoustic improvisation...

In terms of cliche I was talking about how the album was composed (chords, melody ect.), it uses tricks and ideas that I am almost certain existed before dark side of the moon. Very obvious ones. I can't really agree on cliche being okay if done well. Sometimes yes, but sort of no.....eh I dunno. If things do not reasonably add up in my mind, if the cliches don't for me (emphasis on "for me") serve an interesting emotional or conceptual purpose, it bothers me.

Quote:

but as you said everyone can relate to it, which is important if you want any emotional value behind the lyrics!

I could really rant about this (but will try not to because the lyrics don't factor that much into my opinion, only frustration with how the album is praised), but I could not disagree with this statement more. Some random thoughts: By these standards it sounds like art should pander to be emotional! Universal/relatable does not equal dumb/stupid. Relating to something should not just be because it is obvious. People I think can/could be smarter than this. Art arguably can't be universally relatable anyways, so a false illusory move to it is kind of silly, or better yet arrogant. DSOTM's aim at something universal to me renders it meaningless. Big, wide statements are not necessarily profound ones. People assume they are.

well, lets not debate this too much because it won't go anywhere but I want to clarify:

Yourselfisntsteam wrote:

I'm not sure how this thread has become a pink floyd discussion but I feel like saying something.

DSOTM is a pretty good album, but also kind of frustrating. Fantastic sound quality? yes. Some really catchy songs? yes (breath, time, us and them are amazing songs, don't wanna be too critical). However it follows the lame "timeless classic" formula that I am surprised most people don't have a problem with: well constructed but slightly average compositions that lazily use all the "anthemic" songwriting cliches (which won't offend anyone) and then try to plaster on some emotional development through some vague lyrics which arrogantly attempt to portray ideas like "one day we will all die" or "modern life is dull and we work and then we die" as profound philosophy. This bothers me. But of course everyone can "relate to it". I mostly enjoy the album listening to it, but when I think about these things after it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I'm not sure what to make of it, and from there how to feel about the album on a whole.

I'm sorry that was unnecessary but I have wanted an excuse to say that for a while now.

As for the thread topic I expected to enjoy Wilco's "yankee hotel foxtrot" and pj harvey's "rid of me" a lot more than I did (which was not much at all).

Threads will always get off track sooner or later, and this time it was Pink Ployd who hijacked it!

I can see what you mean that DSOTM is a bit of a cliche in some ways, however I'm not sure that it was already a cliche in 1973 or if it first has become a cliche after DSOTM was released. And what if it is a cliche? As long as it's done right, and in this case I'm not sure it has ever been done better.
For the theme, yes it's not that original, but as you said everyone can relate to it, which is important if you want any emotional value behind the lyrics!

After all, "Dark Side" isn't that much of a challenging album, but I believe greatest albums aren't supposed to be any harrowing.

And for the thread topic again: I was also disappointed with "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot", but the last time I listened to it I enjoyed it pretty much and I think it's starting to fall into place.

I also thought Primal Scream's "Vanishing Point" was a good album, but it was more or less a completely waste of time.
