Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited (about what's on the road, which is why the road is important anyway)
Modern Lovers - Roadrunner
Iggy Pop - The Passenger
Joanna Newsom - Good Intentions Paving Company (metaphorical, or maybe not)
Sonic Youth - Pacific Coast Highway (not really appealing though)
Suicide - Rocket U.S.A. (a different kind of appeal)

anyway, as a liberal arts paper, you can twist it into anything as long as the professor explicitly says not to i.e. when Newsom sings "pull over and hold me til I can't remember my own name," that implies she's in a some sort of vehicle (her relationship?), her love story is the road, and then you would likely have a paragraph or two demonstrating several other American love stories connected to the road in a similar fashion, like Another Day in Paradise... anyway, just thoughts.

I chose Thunder Road, but you could make a case for most Springsteen songs! I'd suggest looking at Born to Run as well, I think these two lines sum it up;

'The highways jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive
Everybodys out on the run tonight but there's no place left to hide'

But it's your call, sounds more interesting than anything I ever did at school anyway!

Already read it, it's one of my favorite books haha. Probably the main reason I'm taking the class. We're going to read it again, actually.

Of those three, Thunder Road (Born to Run works too), but there are other great road song out there:

i have to write a paper for my "Road Trips in American Culture" class about a primary source that has to do with the "lure of the road." She said we were allowed to do pieces of art, so I figured I'd probably do a song. The three that I've thought of are "I Get Around," "Thunder Road," and "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out."

Which of those do you think is best? Or am I missing an obvious one? Remember, whatever I pick I have to write 3-4 pages on, evaluating it as a primary source.
