Some of the most interesting music ever and helped make the 70s and the 80s my two favorite decades in music. Of course Joy Division is the first band most people think of when post punk is brought up but that is deserved. They are one of the most innovative acts to emerge in any genre. I love New Order and the fact that those guys made the best of losing their friend but it would be a incredible to see what kind of album came after Closer and how their career would have progressed in general.

I also love Gang of Four, Talking Heads Wire, Suicide, Sonic Youth, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Cure, Television, and Richard Hell to name a few.

The 21st century stuff is good but does not have the same maverick spirit as its influences.

                          Anyway, here's what Wikipedia says:

"The genre retains its roots in the punk movement but is more introverted, complex and experimental. Post-punk laid the groundwork for alternative rock by broadening the range of punk and underground music, incorporating elements of Krautrock (particularly the use of synthesizers and extensive repetition), Jamaican dub music (specifically in bass guitar), American funk, studio experimentation, and even punk's traditional polar opposite, disco, into the genre."

Mr. Shankly wrote:

I think I kind of have a basic understanding of what the genre is (I'm familiar with some of the more well-known bands), but can one of the fans or aficionados around here give me a succinct yet thorough definition of the post punk genre? When or how did post punk turn into new wave (another nebulous genre title) and when or how did punk become post punk? 🤔 Thanks!

I tend to think that these terms are fluid, interchangeable and often subjective. I personally regard post-punk as a movement that generally covers the period 1979 to about 1984. Of course, there are exceptions, most notably Pere Ubu's 1978 album 'Modern Dance' which was arguably the first ever post-punk release per se.

I would also argue that the main template of post-punk is that it has a linear relationship to punk, whether that be in a musical, thematic, artistic and/or aesthetic sense. In this regard, it seems to me to be misguided to describe say, The Smiths or Magazine as post-punk as some have done.

I regard New Wave to be a distinctive genre that emerged out of New York which pre-dated the punk movement often associated with London. I generally regard the US bands of the New Wave - Patti Smith Group, Television, Talking Heads, Richard Hell etc - to be far more technically accomplished musicians than their London punk counterparts.

It is no coincidence that the least competent of the new wave bands from New York, The Ramones (who were more closely related to punk than New Wave), kick-started the punk scene in London when the Clash supported them.

The latter were one of the few UK bands that could match their US counterparts in the accomplishment stakes and, in my view, were far better players and more interesting than the overated Ramones.

Paradoxically, post-punk (normally associated with UK bands) was invented by Captain Beefheart a decade prior to the period when journalists began labelling bands like Pere Ubu, PIL, XTC, The Au Pairs, Wire, The Fall, Pop Group, Screaming Blue Messiahs, Gang Of Four, The Pastels, etc with that epithet.

Pere Ubu and the Pop Group were two of the most pioneering bands of the post-punk era in my view, both of whom produced highly influential albums in their own right that took Beefheart's aesthetic and shifted it into new directions.

However, its surely no coincidence, that with the release of 'Doc At The Radar Station', the master arguably played the post-punk generation at their own game and beat most of them hands down.

The best tracks on this album remain some of the best stuff he ever did. It is one of the greatest post-punk (and post-rock) albums. The whole recording bristles with fire and intensity.

In many ways, Beefheart's entire music career was preparation for "Doc at the Radar Station", the distillation of his genius and a statement to the post-punk generation. Undoubtably, the post-punk movement spurred the Captain on to raise the bar higher which he succeeded in doing.

It's a testament to his genius that he put most of the pretenders to his crown in the shade.

The Soft Boys 1980 'Underwater Moonlight' album is a record that is worth singling out as a distinctive post-punk masterpiece in that it skillfully blends Beefheart's fragmented blues and Syd Barrett's psychedelic whimsy with an overriding punk sensibility.

The 'Hardcore' scene in the US is also conflated with post-punk, and consequently Beefheart's influence can be heard in many of those bands too. I'm specificaly thinking here of albums like 'Zen Arcade' and 'Double Nickel's On The Dime'.

The other outstanding post-punk releases from this era are the opening trilogy of Public Image albums, all of whom convey a dark, eerie and claustrophic psychedelia bordering on acid-rock.

The music of bands like The Chameleons, Joy Division, Psychedelic Furs, Echo And The Bunnymen, Teardrop Explodes etc can also be regarded as post-punk artists in my view, albeit with a sounds that had dark psychedelic overtones to their music, some with more of a pop sensibility than others.

In terms of the artists who pre-dated New Wave before that term was coined by journalists, I would point to innovators like Roxy Music and Brian Eno who clearly inspired the UK new wave as expressed in artists as diverse as, for example, Magazine, Human League and Ultravox on the one hand, and the synth-pop of Depeche Mode and the awful Duran Duran on the other.

In terms of the artists who pre-dated punk (ie proto-punk) before the term was coined, I can point to the numerous garage/psychedelic bands of the mid-to late 60s - most notably MC5, Stooges, Deviants etc- but also, for example, in terms as aesthetic as wide ranging as early Love, Sonics, The Kinks, The Who, The Kingsmen, Velvet Underground, The Mothers Of Invention, The Shaggs, Godz, Holy Modal Rounders, The Fugs and David Peel.

The New York Dolls in the early 1970s were significant in that they bridged glam-rock with punk and therefore as such identified with a unique form of proto-punk ethic.

Of course, some of the above were the precursors to what journalists have labelled as 'Lo-Fi' which is itself a term that has become conflated with 'punk'. The UK band The Raincoats were one of the few artists who bridged post-punk with Lo-Fi.

🤔 Thanks!

OMG I posted this thread almost 3 years ago ! Makes me feel like resident zombie...
So yeah, my favorite genre deserved a new chart epiphany.

I like all subtypes of post-punk : industrial, darkwave, no wave, experimental, goth, new wave, synthpop...
As long as it's edgy, dark and complex. With a preference for a heavy bassline.

I'm still open to suggestions :)

Do you mind if you can't understand the lyrics?

I don't think so. I've been meaning to investigate the European post-punk scene.
Poland had a few big names with the likes of Siekiera, Kult, De Press, Republika...

Would be happy with any other suggestions 😄

And yes, Television are a top 10er post-punk band.

I got this band in the lineup for the city tournament, maybe you'd like them (I also post their videos on this site every now and then, but I think people ignore it... Or dislike it 🫢 )

Link

(I like some other songs better, but I think this is them at their most "post-punk-ish")

You said something about a heavy bassline... So here's... world's first drum 'n' bass record?

Link

I only just now started listening to the band, so I don't know much about them. But they apparently added more instruments, including a trumpet and a sax. There's also vinyl scratching 😐
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TxSeOO5Rm8
(this one is not really post punk anymore though)

OMG I posted this thread almost 3 years ago ! Makes me feel like resident zombie...
So yeah, my favorite genre deserved a new chart epiphany.

I like all subtypes of post-punk : industrial, darkwave, no wave, experimental, goth, new wave, synthpop...
As long as it's edgy, dark and complex. With a preference for a heavy bassline.
