Better For Us - Grant Lee Buffalo (the chorus on this one is "This oak has grown old, wither-wrung. It threatens to fall. Better for us if the axe splits the trunk, they say." The song is about all the childhood memories associated with the particular tree in question).

I forgot The Carpenters. My parents had them on in the car all the time when I was young (on tape, yes magic 80s!).
And when I listen to "Tunic (Song for Karen)" by Sonic Youth, I can't help think what a beautifully sad voice she had.
