swedenman wrote:

1. Hidden tracks. It makes it impossible to appreciate the album as a single entity.

2. When the album is released with multiple different tracklists (especially in cases such as Are You Experienced or Is This It where the original version is nearly impossible to find in stores in America). The absence of an "official" tracklist just makes it feel like a jumble of songs, not an album (I'm looking at you, Soft Bulletin).

3. When the standard deviation of song length is extremely low. Prime examples include Revolver and Pet Sounds. I just can't stand it when every single song is the exact same length. When this is the case, the pacing gets very repetitive and it becomes impossible to listen intently. Also, on most albums like this, all of the songs sound exactly the same.

4. When the artists clearly gives no thought whatsoever to the ordering of the tracks (Stadium Arcadium being the biggest offender here).

These (most of the time) plus the guest artists thing. I prefer the featuring of a guest artist if it is for the whole album. When it is just a single track it often feels clear that it is for business reasons, not for art.

Agreed. Soft Bulletin is really hard to get into for that reason. There's always the niggling in my head that I'm only listening to one version of it, taking away from that whole "complete" experience. I've heard 5.1 is the "definitive" version though, the one that The Flaming Lips said it sounded like before record companies started messing with it.

5. Fade-outs. It's extremely rare that an artist can pull off a fade-out without completely disrupting the flow of the album (No. 13 Baby by Pixies is probably my favorite exception; its fade-out is so smooth it's almost unnoticeable). This is largely the reason I don't listen to Rumours or Blonde on Blonde as much as I would otherwise.

6. Double albums. I'm probably gonna take some heat for this one, but with the notable exception of the White Album, there's not a single double album that I don't think would've been better had it been shortened to single album length.

I'm sure I've got some more, but that's all I got off the top of my head.

Agree with the first five and somewhat with #6.

Oh. I listen to whole albums too, but I'm listening to music more or less permanently given the ridiculous amount of time I spend studying, so I don't really have any rush to get to the next album in line (unless it gets really boring). 😁
