I'll listen to music while doing math. If I have to write an essay or something like that, then there's no way.

Mancsoulsister wrote:

First thought - What an odd question?

Personally, I have yet to come across an album that I can't read or work to or do any other kind of task to... which seems to be a bit of a rarity judging by the rest of the comments. 😕

🤔

So do the rest of you sit and read or work or study or whatever in stone silence?

I would find that very unnerving and strange...

But then you are all boys... and I am female

Either way - weird!!

*shrug*

This exactly. And I am male for the most part.

I usually put new albums on while I'm reading. This way I can do two things at once. Upbeat and/or wordless music works as well.

Or some space rock probably goes well when reading Ender's novels.

I love the Ender novels. What space rock goes best with them?

Enya (fantasy), Enigma (surreal) or Ray Lynch(spacey) are good for enhancing Science Fiction.
80's power bands go well with Star Trek novels
Nothing works with Star Wars novels except John Williams.
Gordon Lightfoot with Tom Clancy novels.
I imagine heavy metal would be good background when you're reading Stephen King, but I've never tried it.
Current top 40 works surprisingly well with non fiction, especially news. It associates the song with the non-fiction you are reading about, and helps fix it (whatever you're reading about) in your mind, and the music works like a time-stamp.

I can understand reading, but I don't get it when people listen to music (with vocals) when trying to write. The lyrics influence your writing. I'm sure Harkan can attest to grading papers or tests written by students listening to music (with vocals).

I used to be able to read to anything but now it pretty much has to be acid jazz or mellow psych or something atmospheric and not too demanding of attention.

I'm gonna try this, sounds amazing. Also, any epic fantasy read while listening to the Zelda soundtrack becomes awesomer.

I focus better while listening to music. Anything really. Of course every so often I break out dancing and singing, but then I get back to work.

I took it to mean books, textbooks, novels, essays, etc. but not internet-hanging-out or chatting, texting, etc.

If we count those too, then I rarely listen to music without reading.

Also, if I didn't study with music I wouldn't have time for more than a couple of albums a week!

It'd have to be really boring. Not interesting or attention-grabbing in any way, so it doesn't distract from the book. Ambient music might work, just as long as you don't like ambient music.

Yes, only classical if I'm reading anything non-fiction. If I'm reading fiction I just wouldn't because music would shape how I was feeling as I was reading and that would probably take away from the book's ability to.
