Can't let that amount of promotion go unchallenged:

The Jam- Sound Affects

Some might say this album is too esoteric or culturally specific, but I find it to be a great album about being young, angry and trying to figure out a society that often let's the powers above stamp out those who aren't priveldged enough to bypass the trials and tribulations faced in the everyday working world. While it has it's share of cynical and bile-spewing moments, it's humanism and care for it's many subjects ultimately wins out. Really, though, it's about those many sublime musical moments, which may use many different pop tools but ultimately the Jam manage to make each song feel special in it's own right while (informally) manage to make an immediate and cohesive album that works beautifully as a whole despite a lack of an easily definable concept.

Link

Link

Peter Gabriel- Peter Gabriel III

Forget some of it's dated moments (particulary that pre-historic drum machine), this is just one of the strangest "pop" albums out there. And what makes it great is not only how great the songs sound on the surface, but that there's even more appeal in the actual substance of the many gems here. While it may ostensibily be about political (most explicity "Biko") and sociological (the decaying industrial economy of then-contemporary England) concerns, really this is a journey through one's mind and how to ultimately destroy the many demons within. What's great is while it may be about Gabriel's personal demons and each song may be an attempt to destroy his individual mental ailments, that's only part of what he does. Each song not only takes on personal struggles but ultimately finds out how it relates to a much larger problem. It's an inward album that remarkably feels like it could've taken place in our own mind, which makes it such an engaging album despite it's murkiness. And musically it's sublime; you can almost call it pop, but the way he's able to use so many musical ideas and sharp changes in tone within the space of a single song makes it much more musically complex than the verse/chorus/verse structure might indicate.

Link

The Cure- Seventeen Seconds

One of the most fascinating Cure records, mainly in the way that it refuses to play dress-up. This is Cure stripped to the bone, and what Robert Smith and the band have to say is fascinatingly cryptic. I'll let the music talk for itself

Link

Young Marble Giants- Collosal Youth

Again, shows how you need no flashy solos or a plethora of instruments to make a masterpiece, just amazing songwriting. Deserves to be an example in the dictionary for "Skin-and-bones Masterpiece". Which should indeed be it's own word, thanks to this album

Thumbnail. Click to enlarge.

"Inspired by acts as diverse as the Velvet Underground, the late '60s girl group The Shangri-Las and Phil Spector's sonic walls of sound, the Scottish-born brothers William and Jim Reid (the core duo behind The Jesus and Mary Chain) blended anarchic feedback with pretty, fledgling shoegazer on their debut album, appropriately named Psychocandy. The title perfectly captures the sugary hooks, the semi-goth gloom and the shrieking guitars that epitomize The Jesus and Mary Chain's trademark brand of noise pop. On their debut, an album that would inspire acts such as The Boo Radleys, The Pixies and The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, both Reids melded simple melodies with guitar-driven mayhem that plods or sprints along to a three-string bassline by school friend Douglas Hart and a drum machine-like beat supplied by two-drum Bobby Gillespie, frontman for Primal Scream.

Listening to Psychocandy is like listening to a recording of "Be My Baby" played at full blast down the hall, a microphone in a trash can capturing the echoes and fuzz. All the while, one of the Reids drones out the lyrics, some of them evocative and sexual (e.g., "Just Like Honey"), some of them hipper than thou as it postures and adjusts its disheveled hair (e.g., "The Living End," "Never Understand"), all of them undeniably refreshing and cool. Yet years of playing shows - their first one ending with the band smashing the venue's P.A. - helped refine The Jesus and Mary Chain's musicianship leading up to the release of Psychocandy. While it may seem like a blast of noise tenuously tethered to a melody, the album was, in reality, meticulously mixed and remixed to get the sound just right.

The album opens with "Just Like Honey," one of three singles the band released prior to Psychocandy and one of three variations of fuzzy noise that are found on the album. The song features the Spector drums that appear in other tracks on the album, such as the Velvet Underground-sounding "Cut Dead" and "Sowing Seeds." The lyrics on "Just Like Honey" are provocative, to say the least. Lines about a girl's "honey dripping beehive" probably don't refer to her hairdo, nor does the line about being someone's plastic toy seem so innocent. Regardless, the song is so fawning and sincere that it's more a love song than a tale of carnal, scum-eating raunch. "Just Like Honey" helped close out Sofia Coppola's brief encounter yarn Lost in Translation, the soundtrack also featuring "Sometimes" by fellow shoegazers My Bloody Valentine.

The slower songs are a stark contrast to the more abrasive side of The Jesus and Mary Chain, another distinct brand of noise on Psychocandy. This shoegazer leaning follows "Just Like Honey" in the rebellious biker guise of "The Living End." It's a song reminiscent of Hüsker Dü but clad in black leather while making a wide-legged stance as the narrator readies himself for a snarling motobike ride to nowhere. The high-pitched overdrive of "In a Hole" also exemplifies this more abrasive side. If it weren't for the sedate vocals, the song could be cited as an early ancestor of industrial music. Indeed, the youthful rebellion on "Never Understand" could have been classified as industrial as well if it weren't for the flippant quality evoked by the catchy vocal melody or the lyrics expressing teenage-or-twentysomething angst.

The third brand of noise is found on the band's mid-tempo pop songs, found on tracks such as "The Hardest Walk," "Taste of Cindy" or "My Little Underground." Each of the previously mentioned songs is a fuzzy pop gem on their own, the first dealing with a break up, the second with obsession over the eponymous girl in the song and the third about escaping to isolate oneself from the world. These three-chord or four-chord songs are the ones that are easiest to latch on to and often the catchiest offerings on the album, particularly "My Little Underground" with its sing along chorus that concludes with some well-placed "uh-oh-ohs."

Even the penultimate mid-tempo ditty, "Something's Wrong," as sad and a gloomy and—frighteningly enough—personally relevant as it may be, sounds gorgeous. If you lose yourself in the fuzz, you miss the bittersweet lyrics about an important moment of self-realization. On said song, the narrator wonders where his life has been going the last two years and has finally noticed that something is wrong and has got to be changed. As the last round of fuzz pours over the song, it comes down like a warm and sympathetic rain.

Psychocandy sets up what would be a fine run by the Brothers Reid until the eventual meltdown of The Jesus and Mary Chain in Los Angeles in 1998 and the eventual official break up the following year. While the album can't come close to seeing one of those mythic, early Jesus and Mary Chain shows—the band's collective back turned to the audience; the audience, sparse as it may be, washed over with glorious noise — Psychocandy does have the right attitude to evoke images of smoky pubs and riotous youth, all of whom are all so cool, all so misunderstood and maybe a few all too aware of being in the presence of greatness. . " (treblezine.com)

"J.G Thirwell, or commonly known as Foetus, has remained a huge role model in the Industrial rock field for nearly 30 years, releasing 10 studio albums (and hopefully/possibly more on the way). His quirky personality and eccentric melody/rhythm roundups have showcased well in his music, particularly in his earlier albums; and Nail is a near perfect representation of this. His overall sound has never really been accessible or family-friendly (earth shaking percussion layouts, sickening yet hilarious lyrics, and kinky vocals), but his 3rd album released in 1985 called Nail is his most amicable, and in my humble opinion, his best he’s ever accomplished.

There’s a definite fact that needs to be explained here now; this album has incredibly energetic and uplifting choruses that will easily bring a grin to your face, even if your day is going terrible. They are almost guaranteed to shock you and bombard you with enjoyment, almost as if you just won the Mega Million lottery. All of the choruses to found here are very distinguishable in their own right, and not one song sounds the same, at all.

What is really cool about Foetus himself (that one could notice on all of his albums), is the fact that he (more than likely) doesn’t care what he says lyrically. He could one minute be talking about how life is troublesome, and next shift over to sperm, vomit, and/or piss; it’s all what the figure has his mind set as for the time being. Really though, he is one funny dude, and is brilliantly unpredictable. Basically, he doesn't let anything get in front of him.

The melodies on this record are really diverse as well. A lot of them resort to horns and brass sections to create an exhilarating sense of joy, and well, entertainment. A prime example of this is ‘Enter the Exterminator’, a cheerful tune packed with a bulldozer of a chorus and lightning bolts of horns/brass pieces which are all fun to listen to. That song is also my personal favorite on this record too. The song named ‘Throne Of Agony’, which has been acclaimed as his most popular, also retains a rumbling melody and exceptional vocals that rotate from screeching highs to lows. The song is a perfect example of him doing work, and is a fantastic tune to get the album opened. ‘Pigswill’ is a rather darkish song compared to the rest of the album. It features a wide variety of forceful percussions (which, who knows, could be from different parts of the world), a rather amusing lyric line with Foetus shouting DESTROYY ALLLLLL GIRRRRRLS!!!!!!, and one completely badass bass melody; all of those characteristics make this one of the best there is on this album.

Another tune like DI-1-9026 is a pretty good song, but can get really repetitive and a tad annoying with the constant shouting of the song name. The Overture from Pigdom Come on the other hand, is a beautiful instrumental, with its frantic yet outstandingly melodic violin/viola, and the well-known-for percussion lines that overlap occasionally. Honestly though, it some way or form, each song is powerful and will never fail to cheer you up.

Nail is just about everything you could ask for from JG Thirwell. It has his cocky yet hilarious sense of humor, spine-tingling lyrics (well, sometimes), and beautiful melodies; it’s basically fun Industrial rock. To bare it down for you, though, if you are looking for a huge adventure within an album, this album is a definite essential.. " (sputnikmusic.com)
