Oh yeah, and Chrome-Half Machine Lip Moves is also an excellent, often forgotten album

Bauhaus-In the flat Field (inventors of goth rock, even if you don't like goth rock this is a good album)
Arcade fire-Funeral (best album of the 00s)
the Flaming Lips-Soft Bulletin or Yoshimi battles the pink robots
Primal Scream-Screamadelica

If you like psychedelic you will definitely like: 13th Floor Elevators-Easter Everywhere and psychedelic sounds of the 13th floor elevators

Wire-Pink Flag (excellent album, very highly recommend getting this if you don't have it-experimental band that came out of the British 70s punk scene)
The strokes-is this it
Pere Ubu-Modern Dance or Dub Housing
TV on the radio-Dear Science

I'm glad I could help. A few others came to mind recently. As a lover of punk and pop, I'm going to assume you have some stuff by The Buzzcocks. If not, both of these are great comps of theirs:

1) Singles Going Steady
2) Operator's Manual

I recommend these by Belle and Sebastian (influenced by The Zombies, The Left Banke, Love, the quiet side of the Velvet Underground, Donovan):

1) If You're Feeling Sinister
2) Tigermilk
3) The Life Pursuit

These are good albums by Yo La Tengo:

1) I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One
2) Painful
3) And then Nothing Turned itself Inside Out

Also, this sort of flash in the pan album came to mind and is worth checking out:

The La's--(It's the only album this Liverpool 60's inspired band ever made, but it's really good)

As far as the singer-songwriter angle goes, do you have any Elliott Smith? He's well worth checking out (and was very influenced by both The Beatles and Nick Drake)

OK, I don't want to overwhelm you. If you end up listening to any of these suggestions, I'd love to hear what you think. It's great fun playing record store employee.

milton nascimento - clube de asquina (beatles meets pink floyd, gets a traditional brazilian marriage)-Will check this out.
king crimson - in the court of the crimson king (you make know this one)-Have it, love it.
big star - #1 record (guitar pop in the vein of the zombies, but much better)-Big Star is awesome, I have Radio City and Sister Lovers as well as #1 Record
leonard cohen - songs of love and hate- I have this one too. Great.
oasis - what's the story morning glory
lou reed - transformer
smashing pumpkins - siamese dream -These last four are classics and I have them. Very good albums.
jefferson airplane - volunteers

If you like psychedelic pop, Robyn Hitchcock comes to mind so I recommend these to start:

1) Underwater Moonlight-- The Soft Boys
2) Globe of Frogs-- Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians
3) Eye- Robyn Hitchcock
4) I Often Dream of Trains-Robyn Hitchcock

Also, I really think if you haven't discovered them yet, you need to check out Guided by Voices. Human Amusement at Hourly Rates is an excellent best of primer for GBV neophytes. Also, you can't go wrong with these:

1) Bee Thousand
2) Alien Lanes
3) Mag Earwhig
4) Isolation Drills
5) Propeller

The thing about GBV is, their songs sound weird at first, but after about four or five listens, they will have invaded your subconscious and you will be a fan.

As a lover of punk and The Velvet Undergound, you might like Jonathan Richman too. Check out:

1) The Modern Lovers
2) Action Packed (Best of the Rounder Years)

If you like White Light, White Heat, you have to check out Sonic Youth. cant go wrong with either Daydream Nation or Sister. Evol, Goo, and Murray Street are good too.

Your love of The Zombies and the Beatles suggests you might like these:

1) Mass Romantic or Twin Cinema by The New Pornographers
2) almost anything by the Decemberists
3) The Soft Bulletin--The Flaming Lips (Actually, almost anything they did in the 90's is great, but a lot of it's noisier with more emphasis on guitars)
4) Oh! Inverted World and Chutes too Narrow-The Shins
5) In the Aeroplane Over the Sea--Neutral Milk Hotel

You might like Captain Beefheart-Trout Mask Replica but if you don't try Safe as Milk first

You should check out jazz, too. Good starting points include Miles Davis' Kind of Blue and sonny rollins' saxophone colossus. Check out my chart if you want more jazz picks.
