It was also a decade of excess and many, many good times, that are forever in my heart. I wouldn't trade or give up or change a thing. Now as my kids get older...I can share a few things....not everything though! On this forum of fine people I feel much more free to share. Eighties music is obviously my favorite era....for it was then that I discovered what appealed to me. It was also because of sooo many great artists at one time. On one side you had some people who were around in the 70's, who had yet to have their big commercial breakthrough until the 80's. Micheal Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC, Prince, and Judas Priest would all become superstars and enjoy great longevity to this very day. Then you had people who came on, took over and became superstars overnight. Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Van Halen, Madonna, and Iron Maiden would become immediate superstars. So the age of opportunity was there. Reguler rebellious teenagers could get some instruments, go to their garage and become Metallica, Guns n Roses or Poison over night. Rags to riches...happened all the time in those days. What an era to grow up in, be a part of, and to hold onto, and cherish forevermore!

RFNAPLES wrote:

My favorite era of music is 1909 to present, the era of the album. With better recording techniques, jazz albums picked up in 1954 and rock in 1962. With the introduction of CDs in 1982 many old albums began to reappear with enhanced sound and bonus tracks.

CDs came out in 1986 dude!!

My collection includes selections that reproduce the early classical music of the Medieval (476 – 1400) and Renaissance (1400 – 1600), the Common practice period, which includes the Baroque (1600 – 1750), Classical (1730 – 1820) and Romantic (1815 – 1910), and the modern and contemporary period, which includes 20th century classical (1900 – 2000) and contemporary classical (1975 – current). Jazz and blues from 1910 to present, country from 1920s to present, and rock from 1950s to present.

If you look at my chart, it includes 2% 1950s, 32% 1960s, 30% 1970s, 12% 1980s, 18% 1990s, 6% 2000s. So if you are considering only contemporary era music that would be the breakdown of my favorites.

I've been violently molested by assessments.

Also had a killer weekend last weekend .. Went to Melbourne for a night for a football game, partied in Sydney the day after for my room mates 25th and came back to Brisbane for the A League Grand Final. (which was an incredible game that you all need to youtube immediately)

Have you been minding your manners while I've been gone Gary?

I love the metal of the 80's.
I love the grunge of the 90's

But if I had to pick a 10 year span of time for music overall I would say 1967 - 1977.

Are you getting a better idea of what I like and don't like yet? I agree with you that good songwriting is what it's all about. Hence, why the Beatles aren't overrated, for example. I think it was Quicksilver Messenger Service who I associate with The Grateful Dead (whose aesthetic I can't stand ) for some reason that made me think you were into the jam band aesthetic. I admit I haven't heard them, so I'll have to listen to a bit some time. So many of those "psychedelic" bands were such hacks though. To my mind, there were only a few really good psychedelic bands that deserved the notoriety they received. Pink Floyd comes to mind.

I couldn't agree more about the Dead. Never owned one, never will. You need to check out QMS 1st album tho, hardly jamband stuff. "The Fool" is such a gas! And again, the Steve Miller Band was different on Sailor, not the pop stuff from the 70's. First cut, Song for our Ancestors! Wonderful! Living in the USA maybe a harbinger of the 70's but it's still a rockin' good time. Psychedelia is pretty much absent on my list as most doesn't hold up over time I agree again. Floyd is an exception, tho there isn't a Floyd album on my list yet and there may never be. I like Meddle. Stay tuned as I have a few sweet "under the radar" albums yet to be unveiled which I hope you'll appreciate. Thanks!

Dude, you've got the Steve Miller Band on your list!

People tend to take recommendations from people who are into similar types of music. People who are knowledgeable about musical history like many on this site are good sources for recommendations especially when they are able to see what you like and make recommendations from there. Note: (Making recommendations to someone that doesn't take into account his/her musical taste is a waste of time) Looking at your list, I can tell you're knowledgeable (mostly about stuff from your era), but I can also tell we're into different types of music. You clearly like a lot of prog/art rock and jam band type of stuff, which is fine, but it's not really my cup of tea. I do like some of the stuff on your list though.

I hope you're excited about my Steve Miller entry. Sailor is great. It stands on it's own. And you're exactly right. Tastes are different. And while I can possibly put a Beethoven, Holst or Sibelius on my list, I'm a rocker. Since the first album my parents ever bought for me, Meet the Beatles. I'm very picky about what I listen to. Words do very little for me so the music better be good. Not too hard not too soft. Good songwriting above all. That's it in a nutshell for me, good songwriting. So, my list IS from my era but I'm still living it. I buy stuff I'm sure most have never heard of and maybe someday they'll be on my list. Until then I stand behind my distillation of the past 50 years in music. I have a few more to get my top 50 together anyhow. I have a few real good ones I'm holding back for some asinine reason. So far I have a couple in the prog/art rock category and no jam band stuff that I'm aware of so I'm not sure what's NOT your cup of tea. 🤔
