I actually used to be a huge fan of oldies, but then I discovered something I liked even better through searching through band's catalogs and websites such as these. Oldies aren't my favorite type of music anymore, but there are definitely oldies that I am a huge fan of(specifically Pink Floyd and Dire Straits). I came to BEA as a kid tired of the RS 500, and found personal favorites matched with Pitchfork faves, Scaruffi faves, etc. within the same charts.
I can't say I'm proud of that or even happy since that is apparently considered to be some of the better music in more modern times.

Indie is just a label that refers to rock and pop artists who are independent labels or under the radar, which means there are a lot of different sounds associated with it. I bet there's some artists or bands you might like, just like there's some mainstream I like. I also like a lot of older music.

I think the greatest thing about BEA is that its "better" (for lack of a better term) users charts are amalgamations of all the publications charts.
Other sites do this, such as RYM allow this too. What makes BEA great is its incredibly personal forums, where users are allowed to pretty much do anything; and the user base is so small that every user has a basic personality snapshot of other users.

So, the great thing about BEA is finding users with similar tastes as you, and finding out from which sources they got their stuf from, I think.

No

Yes, but I wouldn't call it a coincidence. People come here because they wanna share and discover. If all someone is interested in is the Top 40, that someone should stick to the Top 40 websites.

Maybe it will, maybe it won't. That does not matter. What truly matters is that when you put music on, the music turns you on.

I agree. I love Pink Floyd, maybe because they were pretentious first. The Wall is one of the most conceited albums in the history of music. Roger Waters let the success get to his head.

Sites like this have changed my music taste for the worst.

They make me hella cynical about music. This is because I have been let down by many hyped albums/ artists by comparable sites.

Also another thing that does not apply to me but I have seen it happen to other people: when people come on sites like this they generally stop liking music holistically and start making needless dissections of genres and influence. This also just makes people cynical.

another thing about these kind of sites is that they generally shame you for not listening to certain genres or influential band for that genre and this is dumb ass hell. Its always better to progress through a genre/ band discography naturally so you can make your own decisions as to what you think is "best" without outside influence.

Thank god I don't actually talk about music here.

I used to feel very similar, but I quickly discovered that it's the indie scene hispter people that are pretentious, not the music itself (for the most part). If you're able to listen to the music without connecting it to the people that are typically associated with it, maybe you'll be able to draw the same conclusion.

If you look at my custom chart about my taste as a 12 year old, that had not changed much until I came across this site. I highly believe that the wave of digital downloads has increased music knowledge and hence, helped me.

BEA led me to other sites that have expanded my music taste. I think my attitude is that I want to just listen to music and experience what is different out there. I cannot stand pop music at the moment as I am currently obsessed with ambient and post-rock.

Stay long enough and you will discover some great artists that none of your friends would have ever heard of (eg. Talk Talk, Tim Hecker, Rowland S Howard [for me]).

Some that come to mind: Neutral Milk Hotel, Iron and Wine, Built To Spill, Sufjan Stevens, Grizzly Bear, Radiohead...
