I've seen the Lips live eight or nine times, and the only pre-Soft Bulletin song they ever play is 'She Don't Use Jelly'. Such a waste of so many great songs. Ho hum.

Balance is key. Of course a band should be able to showcase newer music, but neglecting older hits will be a big disapointment to the majority of the people attending.

Pearl Jam are the masters of this. Then again they often play 30+ song shows so that makes it much easier.

When I saw Radiohead this year I was dissapointed at how little they played from the begining of their discography.

And I remember Silverchair didn't play Tomorrow for the last several years they toured. Pretty ridiculous to shun the song that made them famous.

Depends on the band. They should appeal to the fans that most come to their shows. So if their older material is more popular, but more people come to the shows for their newer material, then play that. if more people come for their older material, then play that.

This is in regards to bands that have hits that the fans love and expect to hear when they go to a show. Should the bands feel obliged to play the same hits over and over again with a few changes? Or should they only play a few and play mostly their new material and keep evolving?
