The albums which followed are less essential but still interesting, with In Rainbows being something of a return to form.

In conclusion, I like them and if you don't then reading this is not going to change your mind. So, why am I writing it? Somethin' to do, innit!.. and I need the points.

Yeah. He killed two birds with one stone, first he avoided Justin Bieber and second he got rid of his awful band, Nirvana.

Personally, i also hate the Beatles. Not as much as I hate Radiohead, but I don't like a majority of their music.

Popular, yes, but nothing like the Beatles ..."only" 2xplatinum in US

Popular in the sense that everyone loves them. Not necessarily that they were successful commercial wise(which they were), but critic wise. Not only that, but popular in the sense that they are considered one of the best bands of all time.

The only song, yes song by Radiohead that I've enjoyed is Paranoid Android. The rest is just not interesting for me.

I have had this discussion with my wife after we saw them last weekend in Melbourne. She knows enough about Radiohead to appreciate some of it (she is also a high school music teacher). Grunge had started to fall by the wayside and Radiohead after some success with The Bends got back into the studio and wanted to create something removed from their earlier efforts. The band experimented with electronica more on Kid A but OK Computer was the foundation for the pioneering aspect of Radiohead in "electronic rock" (coined by my wife and I after the concert).

Thom Yorke and Radiohead are both creative entities and I don't think luck is the major factor in their success. They create the music for themselves which the fans latch onto and then the critics love. I think the main reason for why they are seen as good is because they are different. They are the ultimate band that people can educate others on. Many know the Beatles, many know Pink Floyd. Example: After our trip to Melbourne, a student on Monday asked what I did on the weekend. I said "I went to Radiohead." Out of a class of 29 students (aged 15), one students knew who I was talking about. They are the band that are popular enough to be important for many but obscure enough to let a younger generation feel empowered by knowing them.

In summary: Radiohead are up there because of just enough popularity, just enough "hipster" level, their creativity, their timing and critical acclaim. Many may hate Yorke's whining voice, the instrumentation, the bravado or their popularity but obviously people find something that connects with them. Music is about connection; without it, music becomes vacuous noise.
