Maybe some hip hop dudes are using In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida to scratch with but other than that your efforts to canonize this album falls on deaf ears.

As I said, I am not a big flower power music fan. I made the recommendations from albums in my collection in response to the forum author's request. I think In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is a good representation of flower power but it certainly won't appear in my top 500. It does appear in Robert Dimery's (General Editor) - 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die (2005). It is given an average rating of 4.5 stars (out of 5) by 107 Amazon reviewers. It also spent over a year in the Top Ten and is still in print so it really couldn't have been just a fad. People liked it then and are still buying it today.

Ya right... those people are morons then. Iron Butterfly in anyones TOP 200 is ridiculous. All Music is a great site but they make mistakes too. I think basing your opinions on someone else's opinions can get a bit dicey at best. Senor Nipples you're at it again. But you are right about one thing, junk does sell. Keep up the mediocre work, you're precious.

Personally, I am not a big fan of flower power music of the late 1960s and early 1970s. I do own the albums I recommended and believe they are fairly good representatives of the style. Sales figures are not a guarantee of quality especially if you believe that people prefer to buy junk.

It is probably fair to say Iron Butterfly was a one-hit wonder even though they have 13 albums out. In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida received the following ratings:
4.5 Stars - All Music Guide (USA) - Album Ratings 1-5 Stars
9 - Martin C. Strong (UK) - The Great Rock Discography 7th Edition, Ratings 1-10
4 Stars - Virgin Encyclopedia of Popular Music (UK) - Album Ratings 1-5 Stars (2002)

I saw Iron Butterfly in '69 I think and we thought they were lightweights then and they are still lightweights today. But the nostalgia aspect makes them more listenable today than in the day. And why would impressive albums sales have anything to do with quality? That viewpoint totally blows.

For all the times I've tried I still can't get why Forever Changes is so great. Iron Butterfly as a suggestion truly blows tho. I'd ask you to give Quicksilver Messenger Service a try. First album. The Fool, the long tune, is still a gas! Blues Magoos and 13the Floor Elevators are good choices. Nuggets box-set is loaded with some of the best tunes from the era. Flower Power wise just for a modern twist you might want to check out the Orgone Box. And while there is no Woodstock sound I guess, it is an era. And the era is loaded with rock heros. So they all fit in nicely. Except for some.

Ehhh that Iron Butterfly record has got to be one of the most inadequate slices of rotten pizza i've ever tasted. The title track is interesting for about three minutes, but side B? Yikes. Its usually cited as influential acid rock, but to me it sounds like my friends and I jamming after doing cocaine all night.

if you are looking to expand on that Jefferson/Byrds west coast 60's sound, try listening to Forever Changes by Love if you haven't heard it yet- one of my all time favorites. Or as joannajewsom suggested- the dazzling self titled album by the United States of America.
