Depends how good the melody or hook is.

Something like the synth break-down in Pyramids by Frank Oceans should repeat more often. Twice in a 9 minutes song does not satisfy.

Repetition is okay if SOME of the elements are changed. For example, it drives me crazy when a band just repeats the same chorus over and over without changing the instrumentation, the tone, the tempo, etc. Now, if a band wants to use the same lyrics over and over again, they can be my guest, but some things need to be changed. Like, I literally want to shoot a puppy when the second chorus comes up and it's LITERALLY indistinct from the first chorus. I mean, what's the point? If you are so uncreative that you can't come up with a way to rework the second chorus, then at least have the creativity to restructure your song so it doesn't need a second chorus.

This is why repetitive albums such as Rubber Soul are garbage whereas repetitive albums such as Nevermind are masterpieces.

Absolutely love repetition in music. Dark ambient music has taught me to love it.

Also i really like repetition in musical themes like Hazards of Love by Decemberists

I think this loop is beautiful, but an hour of it is a bit much, even with the added interest of the loop slowly disintegrating over time. I think I could happily listen to about 10 minutes of this before I'd want it to move on to something else. What's your mileage? 5 minutes? 20 minutes? 30 seconds?

With Basinski, it's not something that is meant to be enjoyed very often. I can listen to that loop once every few months, find it incredibly enjoyable, and put it away. Always found it very thought provoking though.

As for the repetition thing, I think it varies a lot depending on the artist. Some can throw away great hooks after barely utilizing them (The Unicorns album Who Will Cut Our Hair When We Are Gone comes to mind), others can build a song off a very simple idea. I guess execution is the only important thing.
It's what makes the music after all. Keeping something going on repeat and playing it agian later in the song. Unless we are talking about playing the same continual loop for 5 minutes, then it is most definitely a good thing. It's what makes the music after all. 😜

Repetition, done well, is one of the best weapons in an artist's arsenal. Done badly it can be horrible.

The Beach Boys opened up a can of worms with Good Virbrations going over 3 mins. Sometimes a song deserves to be how long it is (e.g. A Day in the Life by The Beatles), sometimes a song is made longer just to fit commercial/radio format and that is where most of the songs too long criticisms come from.

Or course I do recognize that if you do not like a song then it is an easy criticism, but my point is that a lot of easy cheesy pop songs I sometimes feel are entertaining and I would not "dislike" them even if I am not a pop guy at all but usually by the time the song ends on first listen i feel i have already listened to it 3 times with the 2nd and 4rd time being merely a repeat of the catchy bit. If artists would recognize the music they are doing for what they are doing and record it to the length it should be rather than ending editing it to format, there would less hate for pop music out there (less but not none of course).

p.s. BTW, this was not a criticism of Good Vibrations, this song is not too long or repetitive, but int he history of music, it is the pop success the opened the door to this sort of nonsense.

After split up Kevin Ayers did the same on his solo albums , one of the finest examples is
Stop this train and let me out last track on the Shooting for the Moon album (with lady Rachel as small hit on it)
Ayers did it on almost every album he made except from Sweet Deceiver, I like him a lot dont know if he still produces music
