I have actually noticed a lot of hate lately. Not all harsh attacks on others musical taste are innocent sarcastic jokes. Don't exactly know what it's caused by, but it seems that people often get mad whenever I mention a certain band from Liverpool. Why is probably because I keep presenting them as the objectively greatest band and all I ever wanted to say was that I think they in some way surpass every other band, but apparently it gets interpreted as a "you're wrong, I'm right"-attitude from my side. Will stop bringing them up all the time!

For the open-minded thing, I never gave electronica a chance before I joined this site. Unlike other music I liked at that point, I didn't feel that electronic music was "alive"! I now love genres such as ambient, acid house, break beat, drum 'n' bass, big beat, etc..

I am open to a lot of music

Especially since joining BEA

But I still prefer rock, blues, funk, soul, reggae and psychedelic. There is hardly anything else I listen too.

I do think people are very opinionated, and people that sit around and talk about music tend to be snobs (I mean they have the time to sit around to talk about music, instead of work 2 jobs and support kids as a single parent or something), so obviously the people you are dealing with are at least able to be pompous. Plus you are on a "best ever albums" website. Some form of elitism has to exist with these people... of course I am too elitist to be a part of them... hehe.

I think it's safe to say that everybody on here is passionate for the music they already love, but often that can go in the other way as well, as they can passionately say which music they can't stand and be particulary vocal if they think it's getting undue praise. That's going to happen in every art-based site you go to. I think perhaps sometimes a poster says something that feels like it's more of a personal attack rather than an argument against a certain type of musical style, or perhaps has more of a "my music is the greatest, tis fact, and you're all wrong if you don't see it my way" arrogance that can derail the discussion from a certain musical topic to a critique over that users foul attitude. That sometimes can lead to a bit of nastiness in the forums. However, I don't think that it should be viewed as a personal attack if someone disagrees with your love of a particular band or album and is vocal about it; that's always going to be here and if you're passionate enough about what you love you should be willing to defend it rather than getting overly indignant and constantly calling foul if your favorites are from time-to-time stridently denounced by another user.

And to shed some light on a side discussion here, I think there is a difference between coming to BEA to "change" your taste against coming here to help "expand" it. I don't think my overall taste has really changed here, but my time here Ive discovered many great albums from the hip-hop, jazz, post-rock and black metal scenes, areas of music I was a pretty inexperienced listener hitherto but managed to find many gems I may have not come across otherwise. Same goes with the genres I already love, like punk, post-punk, ambient, singer-songwriter... while I came in here pretty well-versed in those areas I have managed to find even more different styles and sounds in each of those genres, and I think both finding new albums in areas of music you're not familiar with but are willing to explore, as well as help expanding your knowledge in genres that are already your favorite, is why BEA is really here in the first place. That's just a personal interpretation though, obviously like all great music out there BEA means different things to different people.

People will usually be really nice around here as long as you:

1) Speak in terms of your opinion and not in absolute terms.
2) Have your opinion be well structured and have a correct basis on facts. Even if it's your opinion, it must be backed by SOME facts.
3) NOT be closed minded and shun new stuff without giving it a chance.

If you say either "The Beatles are the best band ever objectively" or "IMO, The Beatles are great because they invented free jazz" or "All rap sucks, it's all about hos and money" or something along those lines, you're gonna get bitten.

Other than that, though, people here are REALLY open minded and cool.

No I didn't pick from the overall chart haha, but the reason I was first attracted to this site was that my taste was very similar.

You're right. I look down (for want of a better term) on certain music. Because I think it's shit. Similarly, others look down on the music I listen to. Eventually you figure who's into what and you just deal with it. If you piss a few people off, so be it. This site is for discussing music and sharing your opinions on it. Everyone's opinion differ (thankfully), and so there are bound to be arguments. Luckily it never gets too out of hand, and everyone is pretty sound. I don't know of anyone who thinks their taste is "the only correct one" though. Mine is the best though.
