The differentiation between Art and craft is interesting when applied to music. I mean, when talking about plastic arts it's easy to differentiate between a painting and a chair, but how can you say one album is a work of art and another is done for income? Is it possible to differentiate between them? Or does it just lay in the creator's intentions regardless of what the final product is?

It certainly has the ability to bring me up and down emotionally, as those other artforms do. I don't even remotely consider innovation or originality when listening to music, but simply how it sounds and the content of the lyrics (if there are any). As far as the whole objectivity thing, I feel that it is silly to believe anything other than that an individual's perception of music (or any other art) is subjective; you can statistically approach a general consensus, as this site does for music, but that will still never please everyone.

As usual, purple says it all.

I would only dare to add that I'm intrigued by innovation, but then again, if that innovation didn't appeal to my sensibilities I probably wouldn't consider it innovative.

Music has been a major part of my life, all my life. I am grateful to my parents to not have grown up in the disco age, but the birth of rock n' roll. My parents are the ones that got me into late 50s rock n' roll, especially the "greats" that started the whole thing: Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Elvis, etc. Then, while they were teenagers/in college, they were listening to stuff like The Beatles/Stones and Quicksilver Messenger Service/Iron Butterfly. My dad even went to Altamont and saw The Allman Brothers Band play in some park, unannounced. Sly and The Family Stone and Steve Miller Band to add to the list.

From my Grandpa, I got big into Glenn Miller. First and only box set I bought was Glen Miller.

My brother is a unique person and hates modern music. So from him I got classical music. When he went off to USC to study classical music, I lived with him and he got me into the Silverlake Music Conservatory. We would talk A LOT about music theory/history etc. It was fun because we both got to learn and appreciate my love for modern music and his for "art music". please see my every growing "art music" chart for what I have learned from those experiences.

When I was about 12-16, I was home a lot alone. Luckily my parents had this giant Sony sound system that was a bit less fancy than this one pictured. It had a record player, tape player, and a CD player.

Thumbnail. Click to enlarge.

I listened to a good 2-4 hours of music a day on this thing. It was during this time that I found my love (influenced by my oldest brother and youngest sister) for late 80s/early 90s alternative music. R.E.M., U2, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, NIN, etc.

Then moving to Los Angeles (around the same time my bro went to USC) I got into whatever you want to call the stuff from the 2000s were.

I have played bass since I was 14 when this prodigy guitar player asked me to learn it to play with him. He could play Beethoven's Für Elise on his guitar.

I also have seen quite a few shows and love live music.

Music is the art form which speaks the most to me. I find it to be one of the most abstract art forms. I hold music above other art forms, but that's mostly because I'm very ignorant of the other branches of art. Music affects my daily life enormously - most of the time I'm either listening to music, talking about music, playing music or thinking about music.

I believe music has objective qualities. However, these objective qualities aren't "good" or "bad" by themselves, but gain significance on the mind of the listener. So we can objectively say "this song is longer/louder/morecomplex/higherpitched/slower/moredifficulttounderstand" but that's not intrinsically good or bad. So yeah, there's not one best ever album which's name is written in stone, but rather one favorite album for each person which changes over time. Therefore, the closest we can get to speaking about objectivity is BEA - the sum of (almost) everyone's opinion.

Scaruffi's a dick, but he has good taste.

Something I've been pondering about lately: Is ALL music art? What defines a song/album/piece as a piece of art? The "artiness" of something is defined by the creator or the beholder?

but i heard some kids at my school say that question and i thought it was kind of cool so i posted it here
you can call me a butthurt redditard if you believe i am so but i am just explaining the reason for my post

Nah, I mean I go on imgur a lot which is pretty much reddit. Your persona screams /b/ though, so I just thought it was funny that you used a trademark reddit meme (given the relationship between those two boards) and posted accordingly.

Anyways, on topic. I wouldn't hold music aesthetically higher than traditional art, literature, performance art, film, etc. but it is certainly the art that I spend the most time with.

Music is an art form that one can not only listen to and be touched by, but one you can MOVE to, in another art form called DANCE. You can't MOVE to a play, or a painting, or a poem. That's what makes music different from everything else.

I've always been a big music lover, and I can't believe I know people who aren't into music. Music had always been a big part of society, and it's been a part of my life ever since I saw my first Disney movie, then my first Kansas album, then another thing and another thing.

Only if you're going for a critic perspective, and not an enjoyment perspective.
btw, I think this is a genius thread, Joj! ðŸ'
