for me, American entries from 1996 I'd consider:
Boys for Pele - Tori Amos
Congratulations, I'm Sorry - Gin Blossoms
The Gray Race - Bad Religion
Bad Hair Day - Wierd Al Yankovic
Tiny Music...Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop - Stone Temple Pilots
Villains - The Verve Pipe
The Golden Age - Cracker
Eventually - Paul Westerberg
Copperopolis - Grant Lee Buffalo
Rocket - Primitive Radio Gods
Tidal - Fiona Apple
Beautiful Freak - Eels
Friction, Baby - Better Than Ezra
Fashion Nugget - Cake
Aenima - Tool
Fountains of Wayne - Fountains of Wayne
II - The Presidents of the United States of America
One Fierce Beer Coaster - The Bloodhound Gang

And UK entries:
To the Faithful Departed - The Cranberries
Bilingual - Pet Shop Boys
Coming Up - Suede
Like Cats and Dogs - Catherine Wheel
Republica - Republica
Razorblade Suitcase - Bush

So yeah, I'm giving 1996 to the American side of the pond.

I mean the first 1996 album that comes to mind is this is a long drive for someone with nothing to think about by Modest Mouse, that isn't my favorite from the year, but if I hear 1996, that album comes to mind.

My 1996 chart has 13 albums, here they are:

Pinkerton
Rocket
Endtroducing
Sublime
This is a long drive
Beautiful freak
Fashion Nugget
Bad Hair Day
Dizzy heights
Odelay
Silent Steeples
Richard D James album
Antichrist superstar

EDIT: So basically 11 American albums, 1 british, 1 ireland.

Nas - It Was Written

Was all set to vote UK until I saw this knockout list. USA gets my vote for Beck and Shadow alone.

an_outlaw wrote:

I was wondering how great a year 1996 was recently for music. There are plenty of great albums from this year and the songs/ singles were stella. However, I noticed the vast majority of what I liked the from this year was from the UK. More so, my most favorite from the year are all entirely from the UK.

Slight Return for example:

Link

Amazing! Did the USA have a feel good single like this one? Show me an American song with a similar sound from 1996 and tell me it is better!

That's a great single. The album sucks though.

Based on my 96 top 20, with Cat Power, Lambchop, Mazzy Star, Smog, Eels, Dr Octagon, Bahamadia, Beck, Red House Painters, Ghostface Killah, Cynthia Dall, The Roots, Labradford : the US win this year.

Only UK albums in my 96 top 20 are Tricky's Pre Milllenium Tension (the only one in my top 10), Nicolette's Let No One Live Rent Free In Your Head, Monk & Canatella's Care in the Community, Arab Strap's The Week Never Starts Round Here.

In the whole of my 96 top 50, there are 33 US albums vs. 12 UK albums, so it's an easy win. On the other hand, what surprises me most is the extent to which that year was so mostly bipolar. I was going to answer "why always those two countries" at first, but my charts reflect that exact same dichotomy on the whole, with only 5 spots in the top 50 for other countries (Australia X2, France, Ireland, Sweden).

Yeah, so I'm going to go with the states for this year. That being said, it was a fantastic year for UK electronica. Thinking about it, I really don't think US can compete with UK when it comes to electronica in general. However, I tend to think that the US simply puts out a greater number of quality albums, likely only because of its significantly larger population.

Ah I forget about Ireland. Yes the Richard D. James Album was very strong, though I still think US wins for this year

And that's not even mentioning the hip-hop from 96'. There were some great British albums in 96', Belle And Sebastian and Manic Street Preachers come to mind, but they don't outweigh the great American stuff for me.

This. I love Belle & Sebastian, but still, This^
