The last 4 tracks on Time Out of Mind was awesome! Cold Irons Bound had the best Dylan bassline (curious if he wrote it, or his studio bass player jamming to something Bob wrote), anyways... then Make You Feel My Love is one of the best love songs ever written. I had forgotten about that song. Very solid. Can't Wait is just solid. Highlands is a good jam. I think I am going to leave Bob with this one, as a high note... going out with a bang if you will.

Just got done with Bridge Over Troubled Water. Review = The first three tracks were amazing! The other tracks were anywhere from 7.5 - 8.5.

If it is about album sales don't matter, and critics as well (especially rolling stones critics), that's cool cause I was just replying to your post about critics and sales. I hope you didn't misread it (is all I really wanted to clarify) and think that that is how I rate my own music, as I feel Jasonconfused possibly originally had.... as I understood his post at least. I brought it up because it was mentioned as a way to judge the greatness of Bob.

I am sure we would clash on a lot of things, but that's what is great about this site... trying out new things, learning new things, having your own experiences and discoveries while documenting them, and trying to understand where other people are coming from with their musical experiences. I mean I am sure you would rip a new asshole into why I think U2 totally deserves the spot they have on BEA, if not argue they should be in the top ten, but I that wouldn't change my mind about em, and neither yours, but being able to express why isn't anything to be hurt/bothered/offended/annoyed/ etc. It is just people's opinion.

To be honest I just completely disagreed with the post, though I was hesitant to draw conclusions about the way you rate music, and certainly didn't think that you took sales and critics into account above personal enjoyment. It was this bit in particular that irked me (although I disagreed with pretty much everything else, but that's life and variety is the spice of it):

sethmadsen wrote:

Not asking for overproduced Bob Dylan, just a Bob Dylan that can sing in key, and his musicians actually having a level of musicianship that is worth recording.

Any level of musicianship is worth recording, and I often think the most rudimentary musicians are the most sincere and endearing (without meaning to imply that the musicianship on Dylan's records was ever rudimentary, because it wasn't).

Anyway, we're just going to have to agree to disagree. This has been a pretty healthy discussion and we're not going to be able to change each others' minds. I hope that one day you learn to appreciate Dylan as I do, and I am sure that the vice versa would be true with regards U2.

Peace.

I don't think sales reflect quality of work, but w/e.
What bothers me here is that you claim there's a "consensus" that The Rolling Stones didn't make great albums??? When was that consensus made?

First off, never claimed sales=quality work. What I did say is that I would agree in this case only, that sales represents quality of work according to my tastes. The albums that sold the most listed here are better than the albums that sold less, for example.

Just saying I agree with the data of album sales as listed... the consensus of the buying public, I guess...

Just find it interesting that the best of for Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan out does ANY of their album releases. I would prefer to listen to a best of collection from those artists, as they aren't the best when it comes to album making... but rock it when it comes to song writing.

Rolling Stones albums like Sticky Fingers, Some Girls, Beggar's Banquet, and Exile are some great albums, don't get me wrong.

Just for fun, best of by those same artists:
Beatles 67-70: 17x platinum
Radiohead: The Best Of: 1x platinum
Pink Floyd: Echoes: 6x
Led Zeppelin: Mothership: 3x (was going to put box set, but that was just all their albums re-released)
Bob Dylan: Greatest hits 5x (I and II)
Nirvana: Nirvana: 3x
Rolling Stones: 12x Hot Rocks

sethmadsen wrote:

That's funny because critics do routinely pan Bob Dylan for his poor performing abilities, as I have already posted on this site, "What is this shit" from Rolling Stone (a magazine that often blindly praises him as well, like the rolling stones)! Most people I know and most things I have read agree with my point of view. People of my parents generation (born just after the war), who also loved his music more for the poetry rather than his musical abilities, then I have read countless critics state the same.

Also Bob actually didn't sell that many records... his highest selling record was 2x platinum, which of course is still great, but compared to other people ranked at as high as he is on this site:

The Beatles: 19x platinum with the White Album
Radiohead: 3x platinum with OK Computer
Pink Floyd: 23x platinum with The Wall
Led Zeppelin: 23x platinum with Led Zeppelin IV

This is actually interesting:
Bob Dylan: 2x Platinum with Blonde on Blonde and same for Blood on the Tracks
but 5x platinum on both his greatest hits, going to show that most people agree his albums have a hint of genius and a hint of shit, as explained before, but his best of work (taking on only that genius part) is brilliant. Hence maybe having a record that someone said, Hey Bob, although song x has a really good story to it, maybe we can make a better performance of it so it doesn't sound like utter shit... you know the usual musicianship thing where you sing in tune, play on beat, etc., the record might be a bit more solid.

Nirvana: Holy shit, Nevermind not only went Diamond (10 million or more) in the US, but in Canada, and France
The Rolling Stones: Some Girls 6x platinum, but Hot Rocks went 12 x platinum... also showing I agree with the consensus that Rolling Stones didn't make great albums, but were amazing song writers. Maybe the same could be said about Bob... but at least the Stones non-mainstream stuff was good and the musicianship side of things... singing in key, ability to keep a beat etc.

I guess I can agree with you when you think I lean more mainstream, as I agree with the sales above. Those albums sold because they were amazing.

Oh and for a Beatles album that is lofi, Let It Be... Naked was the final release of what the whole "Let It Be" project was supposed to be, but they ended up not being able to agree on anything, so phil just took it and produced the hell out of it. Originally intended to be just that... a lofi, unproduced, raw release of the Beatles without the psychedelic studio overproduction... getting back to their roots. It just flopped, is the problem.

Not asking for overproduced Bob Dylan, just a Bob Dylan that can sing in key, and his musicians actually having a level of musicianship that is worth recording. Nirvana nailed this rough around the edges style because, although his voice was rough, etc. He didn't sing out of key in the recordings. Perfect example of Nirvana having good musicianship, but being able to produce possibly the most rough around the edges mainstream music is Endless,Nameless... the guitars are tuned strangely, etc... they purposely sound like shit, but great and amazing at the same time... why, because they had the level of musicianship to pull it off. I disagree that Bob had the musicianship to pull it off.

What? I don't think sales reflect quality of work, but w/e.
What bothers me here is that you claim there's a "consensus" that The Rolling Stones didn't make great albums??? When was that consensus made?

Cool. Just gonna have to agree to disagree, I'd already edited my original post before due to the fact it isn't an argument worth having given we're essentially on the same page, and that I was probably getting overdefensive due to it being one of my favourite artists getting panned, which is pretty hypocritical given some of the things I say about other artists occasionally. Apologies.

EDIT: Just actually read your post, and there's so much here I vehemently disagree with both directly/literally and and in principal. 🤡 Ah well, I'll just agree to disagree.

I think you are saying this like I am stupid... we can agree to disagree. Glad you think your shit don't stink.

A band that nailed rough around the edges: Nirvana.

Plus there is a difference between rough around the edges and playing out of tune, bad notes, drums not being on time, etc. That is just my opinion, and if you don't care about mine, stop reading it.

Does it not occur to you that many, many people - possibly including Dylan himself - quite like a 'rough around the edges' feel to their music?
This is funny... my favorite real album, although a soundtrack, is this one:

Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid is the twelfth studio album and first soundtrack album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released in July 1973

I am still kinda surprised by it... maybe it is because he doesn't sing for most of it :).

haha... ok... by the way just moved to Salt Lake City, where people say that is where the streets have no name... because they don't, it is all based on a coordinate system, like 100 South and 100 East. I find it funny that U2 fans try to say Bono was talking about Salt Lake... sounds like something they would believe.

Ho hum.

The quote is missing where I said at least not that album.... if you like to blast that high winy singing and high pitched harmonica (which is the first time I have felt like labeling anything, "who strangled the cat" because of that horrible high pitch that is just a tad off), great.

However, I wonder if it is the original vinyl pressing I have, because I listen those same songs on Spotify, and it had a warmth the vinyl didn't, if you can believe it. Later recordings, like New Morning, although reminds me of the quality of performance you get from someone like Van Morrison, has a quality I can turn up.
