Kravitz has given a whole new scale to the word 'derivative'. I'm not interested, as I'm generally not very interested in the sounds he plunders.

I remember loving his first album. I was really into the late '60s at the time and a great admirer of multi-instrumentalist singer/songwriter types and this was right up my alley. It had a really nice hippy soul vibe that I thought sounded like Lennon meets Sly Stone (it's been many years since I listened to it and I'm not so confident I'd stand by that judgement today).

I snapped up his second which was mixed on the old desk from Abbey road. A bit more of a fuzzy, riffy '70s style doing it's best to invoke the ghost of Hendrix. Not as focussed as his first but still had some great tunes on it.

Are You Gonna Go My Way was more of the same but a bit more consistent and possibly even more fun. This seems to have been his creative peak and it was all downhill from here. It's certainly where I lost all interest.

Unfortunately, as far as popularity was concerned, the more derivative he got, the more records he sold. He seemed to be content with ripping off the past in a workman like fashion, putting as little of himself into it as possible. His absent minded cover of American Woman was the icing on that cake.

I like his songs "It Ain't Over Till It's Over" and "Believe" - but other singles I've heard have been very dull - his compositional style is very repetitive and too lacking in depth and variety for my tastes. Didn't cross my threshhold for actually wanting to listen to an album.

And I'm never a fan of taking a song as iconic as American Woman and making it your own to show off guitar skills or vocal skills. Just write your own damn song unless your skill happens to be brilliant arrangements that make the song something far more than it originally was.

hmmm... what love affairs.... oh well missed that and don't care....

Anyways, he is an interesting duck. He's got amazing stuff and then just some junk. I love his best of. I tried getting into his albums, and felt like they had no flow.

Are You Gonna Go My Way is easily one of the best guitar licks ever written.

Not a fan, and I can assure you that it has absolutely nothing to do with any supposed "Hollywood love affairs"; I've managed to ignore them and I still don't take him seriously.
