Oh, I actually meant Mount Eerie as in the band, after the Microphones last album(also called Mount Eerie) Phil continued the story into his next project, Mount Eerie(whom I got to see preform last weekend)

My favorite concept album series is definitely Phil Elvrum's (Microphones, Clear Moon). Besides the weird-ass story which unites all his albums, each LP under his Microphones moniker is a tribute to one of the elements (fire, water, air, smegma). It's all pretty easy to miss and not cheesy at all, which is what makes me dislike concept albums usually.

My favourite is Kid A but some says it's not a concept album, so I'll go Dark Side Of the Moon

Second best rock opera series: the Steven series. Alice Cooper's albums that center around the young boy Steven.

1. Welcome to My Nightmare.

Steven is guided by the Curator/Spirit of the Nightmare (played by horror king Vincent Price in the TV special and in the track Devil's Food) who promises Steven chills and thrills beyond his wildest imagination, under one condition: he must not try to escape! Steven accepts, possibly never having a nightmare before. In the Nightmare, he sees walking skeletons, gets beaten and eaten by witches and black widows, and must face growing up (track Steven.) He tries to escape, forgetting about his bargain with the Curator, but then beinhs of the Nightmare drag him away, possibly to Hell.

2. Alice Cooper Goes to Hell

Steven is in Hell. He meets some of the denizens of Hell (Dance Yourselves to Death), meets the Devil (I'm the Coolest), realizes who the Devil is: the Curator (Didn't We Meet), cries at his terrible possition (I Never Cry), pleads with the Devil for his soul (Give the Kid a Break), becomes defiant (Guilty), and pleads with God to get him out of Hell, only to wake up from the rest of The Nightmare and to a happy ending.

3. The Last Temptation

This centers around a different Steven, blonde haired and adolescent (As shown in The Last Temptation comics). A man called The Showman (who could be the Curator/Devil), shows up and once again tries to get Steven's soul...saying he only wants his potential, not his soul. Being bored, the life of thrills seems like a good idea. Throughout, the Showman tempts Steven with many promises and lures, but in the end, Steven (with his faith) defeats the Showman, sending him back to Hell.

4. Welcome 2 My Nightmare

Now we're back to the first Steven. He's in a new Nightmare where he meets a female devil (Ke$ha). But as soon as he accepts being in a Nightmare, people say to him, "What part of 'dead' don't you get?" In an itunes bonus track called "Flatline," the sound of a flatline implies that Steven truely is dead.

Without even needing to think about it, I'm gonna say The Downward Spiral by NIN. I'd say OK Computer as I do feel it follows a common theme, but Radiohead have been adamant in saying that it isn't a concept album so I'll take their word on it.

The Downward Spiral is just... perfect. I really don't have proper words to describe how important and amazing it is. Such a great narrative, coupled with even better music.

And so are nearly all concept albums. Many good records are going to have a cohesion bordering on a unifying thread, but that isn't a concept album.

Tommy was decent, but not great. I was interested in the story of a highly disabled kid turned inspiration, but the music wasn't good. The story was great, though.

One that is mostly not thought of that I really like is Wyclef Jean's The Carnival.

Two that are terrible, imo, are from the Who. I think they tried to make a concept album instead of it coming to them, if that makes sense. Feels forced. Tommy and The Who Sell Out are just not very good concept albums.
