If your problem with the 80s is synths, drum machines, and samplers, I can't help you. Most of what I love in the 80s is New Wave.

I guess if you spelled out what you DON'T like about the decade, it would help more to determine what you might like.

Graceland... really... interesting... I mean I love that album and that with Joshua Tree were on repeat in my house growing up... so no offense meant when I say that's interesting that you think it is the most ICONIC 80s album. It was kinda more like a Paul Simon comeback. I mean, again, don't get me wrong, but surprised with that for some reason.

Sandinista! and Combat Rock are both great albums, but I'd say The Clash are a 70's band since their three best albums came out in the 70's.

Look at peoples 80s charts as well as the overall charts.

I agree that the 80s are a tough one for me as well. I thought 70s would have been, but it actually was the 80s, when I did my list.

Anyways, my favorite 80s artists:

Depeche Mode
Talking Heads
Joy Division

The Cars

For some reason I don't really count these as 80s (really just caught the end of it), but you also have:

My 80s chart.

I recommend anything by Foetus, The Cure or Talk Talk.

They way I have discovered more from the 80s is through last.fm and BEA. Coil, Modern Eon, Bauhaus, Wolfgang Press, Lowlife; I can go on.

The 80s may be overlooked for the development of synth, industrial and pop but there is something for everyone in there.
